Tax Cuts Unlikely

You're not likely going to see any tax cuts from the new Conservative government in the province.

That prediction coming from Chief Economist David Chaundy of the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council.

He calls the budget deficit a huge challenge to overcome and tells CHSJ News the skyrocketing cost of healthcare has to be brought under control.

Alward says there is no way the H-S-T will be raised in order to bring the government more revenue.

Council Faces Pension Woes At Tomorrow's Council Meeting

Whether the long awaited resolution to the city's financially beleaguered pension plan will be reached Monday night remains to be seen.

The city wants to defer all payments into the plan until 2011 and extend the repayment period over 25 years instead of 15 which would result in lower annual contributions.

Mayor Ivan Court tells CHSJ News city workers are also being asked to make sacrifices.

If the province doesn't play ball, the Mayor says the city would have to make an additional contribution over and above what it's paying now of 9 million dollars.

That translates into a tax increase of 17 cents which Court argues is not practical.

Saint John has undergone major social, economic and technological changes over the last twenty years and now university researchers will study the city's transition.

U-N-B Saint John has set up a new research programme, the Urban and Community Studies Institute, at Beaverbrook House in the uptown.

Politics professor Don Desserud will be the Institute's first director and he tells CHSJ News the city's transformation will be of interest to researchers across North America.

Desserud calls Saint John "a living lab" and says the research could be used by anti-poverty and housing groups when they try to get money from governments.

He says there are still a few pieces of infrastructure to be put into place like the buildings sprinkler system.
