Post-Secondary Schools Say Grad Employment Rate Is High

Despite what many people believe, our university and college are saying their rate of employment for graduates within the province is quite high.

UNB President Dr. Eddy Campbell says they studied 2007 students two years after they graduated to find out that 88% of them were employed and most of them in New Brunswick. And even though it's been five years since that study, Campbell believes today's numbers should be similar and -- based on that stat -- doesn't believe many students are leaving the province.

When it comes to more recent stats from NBCC, 90% of grads are employed and 94% of them stay in New Brunswick. NBCC President & CEO Marilyn Luscombe says those stats mean NBCC has a connection with the labor market and they're meeting current needs. She says obviously 10% of grads are unemployed or go out of province, but she doesn't think we should be too paranoid about those numbers. Luscombe says it's not a bad thing that some people go to school here and then leave for a different lifestyle, for money or for relationships. She says New Brunswick needs those students who go away, get global experience, and then bring those skills back into the province.

Luscombe says jobs that are in high demand are engineering technology, business administration, nursing, and ICT.

McAllister Place And Regent Mall Sold

Looks like Cadillac Fairview has decided to part with both McAllister Place and Regent Mall.

Patients and families should call the hospital if they need more information about elective surgeries or non-urgent appointments.

Some City Owned Vehicles Falling Apart

City-owned vehicles are always a bone of contention at City Hall: namely, who's driving what, where and why. Common council looking once again at upgrades to the city's fleet which includes line painting machines, sanders, 4X4s, trucks and more.

Councillor David Merrithew supports the $15 million in upgrades, saying he was shocked by wear and tear on some. He says he poked one city truck with a pen and chunks of rusted metal fell off.

Councillors John MacKenzie and Bill Farren meanwhile expressing concern about city staff using vehicles for personal reasons. More info is being gathered on the fleet and what can be fixed--or cut-- in preparation for the 2013 budget.

He says they would like kids to wear face paint as opposed to masks so they can where they are going tonight.

The Port City Fares Well In Storm So Far

Despite her fury elsewhere, it would appear that Saint John got off lightly where Superstorm Sandy is concerned.

He says it takes private donations to get the latest hospital equipment. Paddock admits New Brunswick has a high rate of heart disease, saying there's a lot of smoking, and increased weight gain with less physical activity. He says we need to invest in both technology and primary health care prevention to promote healthy living.
Heart centre staff perform over 800 surgeries and sees over 13,000 patients across New Brunswick and PEI every year.

The donation contributes to the hospitals year-end goal of $750,000.

Discount Swims Discussed At City Hall

Most of us could do with a little more exercise...and while walking or running are free, swimming in the Port City costs a pretty penny.

Councillor Donnie Snook says he'd like the city to help fund discounted rates at the Aquatic Center, because he remembers the days where you'd pay a toonie to go swim for an hour on a Friday evening.

Snook says common council has a lot on its plate right now but that doesn't mean we can overlook the needs of kids and families in the priority neighborhoods.

Poppy Campaign Helping Our Veterans

The poppy campaign is well underway throughout New Brunswick and across Canada.

President of the New Brunswick Royal Canadian Legion Paul Poirier tells CHSJ news a lot of people think the money goes towards the legion, but it's only held in trust by them. He says the money goes directly towards helping veterans and their families, being used for transportation, furnace oil and other needs.

He didn't have specific figures, but says a branch can raise anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000.The campaign ends on November 11th.

Councillor Warns Clock Is Ticking On The Pension Plan

If common council is to get the budget finalized before Christmas, the provincial task force had better get a move on with its report on the pension plan.

Councillor Susan Fullerton says she's tired of waiting, since the task force was supposed to report back on the shared risk model weeks ago and it's going to have a major impact on the 2013 budget deliberations.

The Mayor has said they're expecting a report any day now.

A $4 million dollar pension payment is due in 2013.

Storm Flooding Not A Major Worry In NB

It's wet and windy out there, but don't expect the kind of catastrophic scenes you're seeing on the news.

Greg MacCallum of Emergency Measures tells CHSJ news major flooding is New Brunswick is unlikely because the storm will be spread out over a period of days, rather than hitting us in a flash surge.

MacCallum adds drainage is always at issue at this time of year and municipalities need to make sure the storm drains aren't clogged with leaves.

Young Liberal Leader Shows NB Politics Capable Of Renewal

Liberals believe they can get onto their feet and into power with a fresh faced leader with no baggage.

That's according to political scientist Don Desserud, reacting to the NB Liberal leadership race that saw 30-year-old Brian Gallant win the top job.

He says while experience is always better than no experience, New Brunswick has a track record of young leaders getting into power more quickly. Desserud says there are two types of experience. One is having a leader of the opposition that's effective and capable of growing a strong enough profile so the party can move into power. The second is the experience of once you're in power, being able to govern successfully and renew that mandate in the next election.

Desserud says being a leader is more than personality and charm, it's about coming up with a credible policy that marks your part. He says an example of that is coming up with a new way of dealing with old problems, such as the economy, health care, and education.

He finishes by saying people are craving somebody with ideas, not statements, and maybe a fresh approach is the right one.

The Rain Should End In Time For Trick Or Treating

Environment Canada says while it will be windy and wet for Halloween, the wind will die down and the rain will stop in the evening for the trick or treaters.

Hurricane Sandy's impact is weakening but still bringing heavy rain and high winds across the province.
Meterologist Claude Cote tells CHSJ News that Greater Saint John can expect rain today, tonight and tomorrow.

He says the total rainfall amounts for our region should be 40 millimetres just shy of the 50 millimetres that was forecast for us.

Cote says Charlotte County is under a heavy rainfall warning meaning the area could get up to 80 millimetres of rain.
With the fear of flooding, Cote says officials are keeping an eye on the St. Croix and Magaguadavic watersheds.

Common Councillor Donnie Snook says the bus is especially important in the urban core. He wants to see the South End have evening bus services extended to 10pm and service restored to other areas as well.

According to financial reports the city would have to pony up at least $5 million dollars just to maintain the reduced level of service we have now, and  Snook says we need to do better than that.

NDP Charges Alward Government With Killing Small Business

Provincial NDP leader Dominic Cardy charges small businesses in the province are suffering death by a thousand cuts because of all of the regulations along with fees and other charges imposed by the Alward Government so it doesn't have to raise taxes.

Cardy tells CHSJ News these are really disguised taxes because they amount to the same thing and he has been told they amount to more than 12 hundred dollars a year.

As for the charge that New Democrats are tax happy, Cardy points out it was an NDP government in Manitoba that got rid of the small business tax altogether.

He earlier called for a jobs tax credit which would be on offer to all businesses that create employment instead of government incentives being available to some companies but not to others. Cardy says trying to pick winners and losers has largely been abandoned by governments elsewhere.

One of Mayor Mel Norton's goals is to change how Saint Johnners view Common Council  because he thinks it is huring the city.

The Mayor wants it to be seen as the "Classy Council" by being respectful to eachother, respectful to city staff, doesn't shout down someone they disagree with or belittle anyone.
