The Governor's Office in Maine is taking a wait and see approach toward the possible sale of NB Power to Hydro Quebec.
Karin Tilburg is Senior Policy Advisor to Governor John Baldacci.
She tells CHSJ news they don't know yet what impact it will have on their efforts find renewable energy sources.
She says it's a goal of the Governor and the state to be energy self-sufficient.
Tilburg says right now they can't say whether it's a better deal for one province over the other.

Man Charged After Another Person Injured in Hampton Accident
A man faces charges after an accident injured another person in Hampton.
RCMP responded to the accident just after 1pm yesterday at Lakeside Road and William Bell Drive. One truck flipped damaging the vehicle and tools which were spread all over the highway. Damage is estimated at over $100,000 to vehicles and equipment

Students Stay Home in School District Six
Nearly half of the students from Quispamsis Middle School skipped classes yesterday amid illness and fears surrounding the H1N1 flu virus. A spokesperson says 37% of the school's students stayed home today--but--expects absenteeism to drop off over the next few days. He tells CHSJ news all but two elementary schools have received their H1N1 vaccinations:

Premier Says Province is Dealing with H1N1
Nearly 20 per cent of New Brunswickers have received the H1N1 vaccination shot according to the premier. Shawn Graham says this province is among the highest in administering the shot, and says the demand for it comes as a shock.
Graham says given there hasn't been a national pandemic like this in decades he thinks operations have been going well. He says right now members of the priority groups are still getting the shot, while others will have to wait until more of the vaccine is made available.

AnyWare Group Reaches Milestone
A local company is on the grow. AnyWare Group has reached the twenty-thousand-user milestone of its health care technology service. CEO Robert Lalonde tells CHSJ news this means more revenue for the company and they will be re-investing in engineering projects, new products and more staff.
Lalonde says this positions the company as a key player in the health care service-provider industry and he is very excited about the future possibilities.

Red Rose Tea Building Sold
Commercial Properties Limited has bought up another heritage building in Saint John. This time the real estate company has snatched up the Red Rose Tea Building on Mill and Smythe Streets. Property manager Jeff Yerxa tells CHSJ news its a modern uptown set against a backdrop of world-renowned architecture, historic sites and compelling streetscapes.
The Red Rose Tea building officially changed hands yesterday afternoon and Yerxa says it's still too soon to say what plans they have for it. He does say, however, there won't be drastic changes to the historic structure.

Big Heart Award Recipient Announced
The Saint John Board of Trade has announced this year's recipient of the "Big Heart Award". Key Industries will be presented with the honour during an awards dinner at the Trade and Convention Centre on November 25th.

Price of Gas Slides Back Down
It won't cost quite as much to fill your gas tank today. The Energy and Utilities Board has set the maximum pump price for regular self-serve at a dollar-point-five--which is down a penny from yesterday.
Diesel has also taken a slight dip landing at 103.2 and furnace oil is down to 84.9. The price of propane on the other hand has inched up to 92.1 cents per litre.

Two Youths Arrested
About six police cars attended the scene of another labour related protest yesterday evening--this time at the intersection of Bayside Drive and the Courtney Bay Causeway. Demonstrators were protesting the use of employees from outside the province by local companies. Police say the protestors were well behaved and they were only there to make sure no one went out onto the road.
Meanwhile, two youths are facing charges after city police found two people in a stolen refrigeration truck near the Courtney Bay Causeway last night. Police tell CHSJ news a company truck was stolen from Colbrook Crescent on the East Side and a number of items are still missing from it. One youth is due in court later today, while the other will be in court on a later date.

H1N1 Clinics to be Held Today and Tomorrow
Public health is holding an H-1-N-1 flu shot clinic in Sussex today -- the shots will only be given to those in the priority groups. A similar clinic has been scheduled for here in the city tomorrow at the Barrack Green Armoury.

Main Street Fire May be Suspicious

A supper hour fire on Main Street north has left up to 8-people homeless and fire investigators suspicious about the cause. The alarm was sounded around 6:30 last evening after flames were spotted behind the buildings at 325 to 333-Main -- this resident - Allan - tells CHSJ News he didn't realize anything was out of the ordinary until fire fighters came banging on his door.
Deputy Fire Chief Mark Gillan is stopping short of calling the blaze arson. No one was hurt and the Red Cross was called in to assist the fire victims -- there is video of last night's fire scene under yesterday's date.

Premier Stands Behind Proposed NB Power Deal

The Premier is confident the proposed deal between NB Power and Hydro-Quebec is going to help push this province into self suffiency over the next 20 years.
Shawn Graham says residents will see significant savings through the deal, and future generations will be relieved of the debt burden.
Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty says it's his responsibility to pay the energy bills for provincial buildings and the deal would save approximately $30 million dollars.
Graham says the province wants to hear from residents with any concerns or more information.

Construction Starting at UNBSJ

The shovels are in the ground for the construction of the health care training facilities at the University of New Brunswick Saint John.
Work has begun on the nearly 2 million dollars of construction associated with the projects, something Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty says should employ nearly 200 workers.
President of UNBSJ Eddy Campbell says over the next 18 months the campus will be transformed.
The construction being done on campus is the nearly 500 thousand dollar NBCC Saint John Allied health building.

The Health Minister says news on when more H1N1 vaccine will be in the province should be known later today.
Mary Schryer says she can emphasize with parents not sending their children to school, since she herself is a mother, but says it's important not to pull kids out of class.
Schryer says parents need to continue to stress to children the importance of washing their hands, and plenty of rest if they are not feeling well.
She says if a child is sick do not send them to school, but if they are not it's important they attend class.
Latest Swine Flu Numbers from Province Are In
As panic and fear continue to grip many around the Province, Public Health is trying to keep everyone calm. So far, 120,000 people have been vaccinated against the H1N1 virus but many continue to wait and wonder when will it be their turn. Chief Medical Health Officer Dr Eilish Cleary says they continue to put foward their best effort to get the shot to everyone as soon as possible.
The clinics to this point continue to be for priority groups including pregnant women. Dr. Cleary adds since April, only 23 people have required a stay in hospital due to the virus but expect over two thousand have contracted the illness so far.

Lunch With the Veterans in Rothesay

Sobeys in Rothesay rolled out the red carpet to veterans today. This is for their annual lunch with the veterans which celebrates the sacrifices made by those who bravely served this country. The idea was born by store manager Don Gass and veteran John Ricketts. His wife Evaleen tells CHSJ News, it started out as just a small luncheon but quickly great into the celebration that it is today.
John Ricketts served in the Second World War and lost his leg in a mine explosion. Evaleen Ricketts adds if her husband was alive and could see how big his dream has become, it would bring him to tears.

City Police have been stepping up their efforts to deal with traffic hot spots and construction zone speeding. Sgt. Jeff LaFrance says the number of tickets for violations rose from about 25 hundred in 2007 to more than 38 hundred in 2008--and--they expect to top that number this year.

He says workers have been very appreciative because of safety concerns posed by speeders. Victoria Square Renovations Being Shown Off
The Victoria Square park in the North End officially re-opens today after the city spent 330 thousand dollars to improve its appearance. Renovations added a plaza, improved lighting and signage, chess tables, seating and a gazebo. City councilor Peter McGuire tells CHSJ news the park is a corner stone of that neighbourhood.

Tourism Awards Announced
The recipients of the 2009 National Awards for Tourism Excellence have been announced. My Trip Planner by T4G Ltd in Saint John--in partnership with New Brunswick Tourism and Parks --have been awarded the Online Innovation Award. Other local winners from Fredericton include edVentures for Innovator of the Year, L’eau chaude - c’est juste le début by Tourism & Parks for marketing campaign of the year, and Karl Doetsch of Delta Fredericton for group employee of the year. The Cape Jourimain Nature Centre in Bayfield also took home the Parks Canada sustainable tourism award.

City Police Prepare for H1N1
The Saint John Police Force has a plan in place to deal with the H1N1 flu pandemic. Chief Bill Reid tells CHSJ news they are expecting the pandemic flu vaccine to be made available to officers in about two weeks. In the meantime, they have cleaning products for police cruisers and officers have been provided with masks, gloves and sanitizers.
Chief Reid says the police department normally offers the seasonal flu shot in-house and once the pandemic vaccine is available, they will do the same thing.

Peel Plaza Takes Next Step Forward
Peel Plaza is closer to reality after the City's Planning Advisory Committee granted a variance on the future Provincial Courthouse. P.A.C. approved a reduction in on-site parking from 230 stalls to 28 with the remaining 202 stalls to be provided by a new parking structure built on Carleton Street.
One of the Project Architect's Gregory Murdock says Peel Plaza is a "Triple P"-a public private partnership. If work on the parking structure begins after the justice complex, the province would have to come back to P.A.C. to ensure that parking is provided somewhere.

Youth Meet to Discuss Poverty Among Peers
15 per cent of young adults in Saint John do not have a high school diploma according to the Business Community Anti-Poverty Initiative. Co-chair of the employment working group Kelly Duplisea tells CHSJ News, the fact there are so many young people in the city who have not graduated high school is making it harder for them to escape poverty, and to even find a job. Duplisea says this problem is not Saint John specific, she says nationally it is hard for someone without a university diploma to find work.
Duplisea says this city has 35 per cent higher poverty rate than the rest of the province, and it is time to get initiatives in motion to help decrease those numbers. She says the challenge in trying to get at-risk youths to finish high school is that every child has specific issues that need to be dealt with.

Due to a shortage of vaccine, all H1N1 Vaccination clinics scheduled for the next week have been temporarily postponed in Saint John and surrounding areas.

Flu Hot Line Flooded With Calls
The province's flu hotline has been jammed with calls over the past couple of days -- Health Department spokesperson Roberto O'Regan says the call volume peaked over the weekend at 95-hundred calls on one day.
O'Regan says more staff and nurses have been hired to handle the call volume and reduce wait times.

Prisoners In Provincial Jails Still On Flu Priority List

It's on hold for now -- but -- public health officials are still planning to give prisoners in provincial jails the H-1-N-1 flu shot -- those clinics have been temporarily scrubbed due a growing shortage of the vaccine.
Chief Medical Health Officer - Dr Eilish Cleary - says they're a priority given their housed in close quarters and many are suffering from chronic conditions.
Cleary says correctional officers were also scheduled to receive the shots because it made sense to do them while giving the inmates shots.

The Horizon Health Network's hospitals and health care facilities are asking anyone with flu-like symptons not to visit patients in the hospital.
Those symptoms include cough, fever, aches and pains, sore throat, and runny nose.
They believe this preventative measure will help protect patients with compromised immune systems from getting sick.
If you need to visit, you will be asked to wear a mask and to clean your hands.
All visitors entering and leaving Horizon Health Network facilities are asked to use hand sanitizer located at all entrances.

NB Power Employee Speaks Out on NB Power Sale of Assets
An employee with NB Power is calling the proposed deal between NB Power and Quebec Hydro that would result in the provincial utility's assets being sold off, a monopolization of the Eastern Seaboard power grid. Roger Stoddard is out on long term disability with the company and tells CHSJ News Hydro-Quebec will have the say on what goes on in our own energy corridor.
Stoddard also says employees within NB Power have been muzzled---and told not to say anything on the issue. Energy Minister Jack Keir says he is not aware of any such instructions.

Local MLA Opposes Proposed Sale of NB Power Assets
The Saint John-Portland MLA thinks Energy minister Jack Keir is from another planet if he thinks energy policy won't change if the proposed sale of NB Power to Hydro Quebec goes through. Trevor Holder tell CHSJ news the government has to go the polls now, hold a referendum or put a moratorium on the issue until next fall's election.
He says if the Graham government wanted to give every day New Brunswickers a break, they should have given them the same deal as the large industrial users.

Mayor Against Proposed User Pay Garbage Collection Plan
Common council has passed a motion that council consider the merits of the user pay system. But Mayor Ivan Court says there is no way he can support implementing a service that increases the cost of solid waste services to the poor, but gives richer citizens a tax break. Court says the user pay proposal is taking advantage of the most vulnerable.
Court says the service needs to be affordable to everyone, and it cannot be maintained on the backs of the poor.
City Considers New User Pay Garbage Collection System
Common Council is getting a look at the price associated with switching to a user pay system for residential solid waste. Commissioner of Municipal Operations Paul Groody says as it looks right now every resident will pay $173.52 for services, which depending on the value of your home could be more or less than you are currently paying.
Groody says the benefits of a user pay system would be it would put the responsibilty of how much you pay directly on the shoulders of those creating waste.

Federal Minister in Saint John attending Tourism Summit
The Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism is in the Port City for the Tourism Leadership Summit.
Diane Ablonczy tells CHSJ News says is pleased with plans to grow the tourism industry in Saint John and in the Province.
She is impressed by the new cruise ship terminal and also hand a chance to tour the city market.

The Horizon Health Network has announced that six H1N1 vaccination clinics scheduled for tomorrow are being postponed.

The Province's Energy minister is trying to dispel myths about the impact of a proposed deal between Hydro Quebec and NB Power.
Jack Keir says the Province is not losing control.
He says nothing changes in terms of the energy policy in the province.

Flu Case Numbers Mounting

The numbers are beginning to grow in relation to the impact of the H-1-N-1 virus outbreak -- the province's chief medical health officer -- Dr Eilish Cleary says there are flu cases being reported in all areas of the province including four people hospitalized.
But Cleary says the good news is no deaths have been reported as a result of the flu.
Meantime -- Cleary says more vaccine is expected to arrive by Wednesday or early Thursday and the goal is still to have all New Brunswickers needing or desiring to have the flu shot immunized by next month.

Angela Jackson's fiance Donald Lanteigne is a Master Warrant Officer training troops in Afghanistan. She tells CHSJ news he is returning home after serving over seas for two months but will be heading back in March or April for another 6 months. Jackson says people tend to go on living their every day lives and forget about what the troops are doing and seeing in Afhanistan--and-- this is just one way to show the soldiers we are thinking of them.

Troops serving over seas in Afghanistan this Christmas will be getting a bit of holiday cheer all the way from Quispamsis. Local artist Norm Jackson has designed a Christmas card to show troops we are thinking of them this season. Jackson tells CHSJ News he hopes about one thousand people will sign the card.
The card is on display at the Marr Road Shell Station in Rothesay for about two weeks before it will be sent to Afghanistan. Anyone is welcome to add their name and best wishes.
Debit Card Use Back Up at Shopping Mall
Folks at the Lancaster Mall could happily shop with their debit and credit cards yesterday. Repairs to a cut fibre-optic cable were all but complete in time for the start of business at Noon.
A Bell-Aliant spokesperson tells CHSJ news that about 12 customers still without phone or internet service will have it back today. Construction crews cut a cable around noon on Thursday, that left about 2500 home and businesses without phone and internet service.

Two Women Charged In Shooting Incident
Two women are facing a number of charges in connection with a shooting incident at a house in the Minto - Chipman area last week.
The women were arrested yesterday by R-C-M-P after shots were fired at the home on Highway 10 last Thursday -- no one was hurt during the hail of bullets.
They are due in court next month.

Fire Hits Former Training Center
Fire crews from the Fredericton area are on the scene of a blaze at the former Kingsclear Training Center near the capital city.
Word from the scene is one wing of the infamous complex had smoke and flames shooting from it this morning.
The complex was closed in the 90's after guard Karl Toft was convicted of abusing boys housed at the center.

No H1N1 Vaccinations at Local Jail
Correctional officers at the Saint John Regional Corrections Centre are concerned about not getting H1N1 vaccination. A caller to our newsroom tells us the clinic was scheduled for today, but was abruptly cancelled late Friday afternoon.
The employee says no reason was given, and for the past two weeks every employee was strongly encouraged to get the shot. With the centre filled to capacity, the employee says it's concerning because neither the workers or the inmates have received the vaccination.
We've placed a call to centre and the provincial government to find out the reason for the postponement, but with no response.

H1N1 Confirmed at Jail
Meanwhile, the Westmorland Institution is operating on a modified routine as a result of a confirmed case of the H1N1 flu virus ans some suspected cases. Officials say the situation has been contained and all inmates considered to be priority have recieved their immunization.
The facility will return to a normal routine once health authorities determine it is safe and regularly scheduled visits are cancelled.

Partners for Life Recognized
A small and emotional ceremony earlier this week honored Canadian Blood Services Partners for Life program. It's a set-up where individuals and organizations pledge a certain number of blood donations ever year. Spokes-person Amanda Cullen tells CHSJ News, it's important to point out that you will still be able to donate the gift of life even with the production facility re-locating to Dartmouth.
Cullen adds this is a small gesture which shows donors just how much their time means. Most of the organizations and individuals on hand have already reached or exceeded their goal.

Last Cruise Ship of the Season
It got started back in June with the arrival of the Carnival Triumph and will finish up tomorrow with the Queen Mary Two. The 2009 cruise ship season in Saint John comes to a close when the vessel docks at 10:30am and leaves port 12 hours later. 2500 passengers are on the board the massive luxury liner, her second visit this year.
This years cruise season was hampered with plenty of rain but that didn't dampen spirits. The ribbon was also cut on the new Marco Polo cruise terminal, we lost some business due to Hurricane Bill but over-all 192,000 people have paid a visit to Saint John. The Port Authority is shooting for 200,000 guests next year.

Card For Troops To Be Unveiled
There's an unveiling Monday morning out in the Ken Valley -- and -- it's an interactive unveiling.
Local artist Norm Jackson has designed a Christmas card for our troops in Afghanistan to show them we are thinking of them this holiday season.

Trudeau Speaks to local Liberals

He says it's amazing what MP's can accomplish in their own ridings.
As a oppositon backbench MP, Trudeau says you might think he would be bored but he says it's extraordinary what you can do working with government and the community.

High Speed Chase
A Saint John Police Officer has a broken foot today after chasing a suspect on ground after a high speed chase last night. At 10:20, police attempted to pull a GMC truck over on the causeway, when the driver refused to slow down, police began a high speed chase down Mount Pleasant Avenue. The suspect drove down several side streets bfore eventually heading down a dead-end street, pulling over and running from the vehicle.The officer in pursuit caught up to the suspect on River Avenue, and arrested him.
The 36 year old man faces charges of fleeing from police, dangerous driving and driving under the influence.

Facebook Protest Hydro Quebec Takeover
After announcing the Hydro Quebec take over of NB Power on Thursday, cries of disapproval have been heard across the province. Though maybe none as strong as a 10,000 member facebook group opposed to the take over.
The group, created Thursday, has members from all regions of the province saying no to the sale of the provincial power company. Clark Hamilton, the groups creator, tells CHSJ News, the overall feeling of the group is anger.
A protest against the sale is planned for November 17th in front of the New Brunswick Legislature.

Banking Scam
The police are looking into a scam where someone is replacing PIN pads at businesses to steal the customers banking information.
The modified pad intercepts bankcard information and the PIN number, and then money is taken out of the persons account.
City police are asking all businesses to check their PIN pads to make sure it is the one issued by the Point of Sale vendor, and if there are any issues or concerns to contact them immediately at 648-3333.

Tourism Summit and Awards
Members of the Canadian Tourism Industry are meeting in Saint John starting today for their annual summit and awards. The national awards for tourism excellence will be handed out on Tuesday with the Saint John Port Authority and T4G limited's work they did with the Provincial Tourism and Parks department in the running to take home some hardware.
There will also be a number of guest speakers through-out the three day conference including Federal Tourism Minister Diane Ablonczy who will adress the delegates tomorrow at noon.

Kenya Fundraiser
A graduate of Saint John High School and his mother are trying to make a huge difference in the lives of many. Pierre and Cathy Robichaud are hosting the first annual Gems of Hope fund-raiser with the goal of raising ten thousand dollars. The cash will be used to purchase a piece of property and build a new school, community center and low income housing in one of the poorest communities in Nairobi, Kenya. Pierre Robichaud tells CHSJ News, after spending time in the area this summer, he is compelled to help in any way he can.
The fund-raiser is at the Trade and Convention Center on the 13th with tickets going for $40 dollars. You can buy some by calling 648-9677.

Blue Bins Need a Home
To reach the maxium potential of the Blue recycling bins, Councillor Chris Titus says there needs to be permenant locations established in the South Central Penisula.

Watch Out For Deer in Rothesay
A couple of accidents in Rothesay last night involving deer.
The first happened around 7 o'clock when a vehicle hit a deer on the Gondola Point Road. No one was hurt, but there was 3 thousand dollars of damage done to the car.
Then around 1:30 in the morning a vehicle crashed into a deer on the Hampton Road. Police say there was 8 thousand dollars of damage done to the car, and the driver was able to avoid injury.
Rothesay Regional Police are asking people to be cautious while driving at night, and to keep an eye out for the wildlife.

Rothesay Regional Police will also be stepping up it's patrols tonight looking for Halloween tricksters.
The police tell CHSJ News, it's been quiet over the past couple of years, with nothing more than a few smashed pumpkins, and other mischief.
The staff Sergeant says absolutely there will be a greater police presence this evening in Rothesay.

Celebrating Halloween early is resulting in 8 people spending the night at the police station.
City police tell us, there were 8 people arrested last night for being drunk and disorderly.

Goodbye to Daylight Savings
Along with remembering to pick up some treats for all the ghosts and goblins, also a reminder tonight we say goodbye to daylight savings time. A series of speeches from MP Justin Trudeau will arrive in Saint John tomorrow. He is the guest speaker at the Loch Lomond Villa's annual fund-raising dinner. Former MP Paul Zed tells CHSJ News, Trudeau is certainly one of the up and coming members of the Liberal party.

The Regional Hospital in Saint John is reminding the public that if you feel as though you are developing flu-like symptoms you are advised to stay home and reduce your contact with family members as much as possible.
If you are in one of the risk groups including pregnant women, people with underlying conditions like diabetes or feel sick enough that you would normally see a doctor.
You should seek medical attention at an after-hours clinic, family doctors office or at a walk-in clinic.
To minimize the risk of being infected you can wash your hands, cough and sneeze into a sleeve, stay home if you are sick, keep common surfaces clean and get the H1N1 vaccine.
If symptoms worsen, call and speak to your health care provider or call 1-800-580-0038.
You should only seek care at an emergency department if your symptoms suddenly get worse.

Phone, Internet and Debit Down West
Over 2500 of Bell-Aliants West Side customers are making do with-out debit, phone and internet service. This after contractors cut through a fibre optic line yesterday which has affected both homes and businesses. Moosehead Breweries is one of them and Vice President of Communications Joel Levesque tells CHSJ News, it is a signifigant disruption.
Levesque is quick to point out that Bell-Aliant has done plenty to ensure the day to day operation at the brewery is not disrupted, transferring land lines to cell phones and setting up an auto attendant feature.

Run-Off Problems at the Landfill
Containment cells 3 and 4 were feeling the pressure of last weekends heavy rainfall. They over-flowed and when the ditch-work couldn't handle the the 116 mm's of rain in less than 12 hours. Luckily, the cells were empty and the area was cleaned and the department of environment notified. General manager of the Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission Mark McLeod tells CHSJ News, the ground in the area was recovered and put back into the cell.

Building a Future for Emergency Department at the Regional
The emergency department at the Regional Hospital is focusing on retaining local staff. Dr. Michael Howlett tells CHSJ News, things are improving at the hospital and with the Trauma Program, new medical school, and the research funding initiative it's an exciting time.
Dr. Howlett says the department is going to focus on hiring local staff and are working on a recruitment process to return to adequate staffing levels. Over the past 4 weeks there have been 3 contracts signed.

More Concern over Canadian Blood Services Move
The Canadian Blood Services distribution center's move to Dartmouth is causing concern for a local haematologist. Dr. Terrence Comeau says it will have detrimental results as platelets do not have a long enough shelf life to be moved from province to province.
Dr. Comeau adds once the platelets arrive in a different lab they will have to be re-evaluated and the more time that goes by, the less effective they become. Platelets are particles circulating through the body which acts as a plug when a person is bleeding.

Schools Closed in District Ten
A high number of students not showing up to class has forced some school closures in District 10. Fundy High and St. George Elementary are closed today, Monday and Tuesday. Back Bay school is closed today and Monday. Black's Harbour and Pennfield Elementary are all closed today only.
Reports indicate so many staff are out the District is having trouble finding enough bus drivers and staff.

Comparing Residential Power Bills
When you start comparing numbers, it's hard to argue with Hydro-Quebec's bottom line. CHSJ News went to the company website and printed out a list of monthly bills for five categories of residential rate payers through Quebec compared to 11 other cities in the country including Halifax and Moncton. If your using between 625 kilowatts or up to 3000, the numbers are hard to dispute.
The bill in la Belle Province starts at under $50 dollars and goes as high as $217. In Moncton, the rates opne at just over $80 dollars and runs over $300 bucks. In Halifax, the price opens at just over $84 dollars and closes at a whopping $364.71 cents.

Poppy Campaign gets Started Today
Since 1921, it has been a symbol of rememberance and today, the annual Poppy Campaign gets underway around the country. 1500 Legion Branches and it's members will be distributing the red flowers in exchange for a donation. Bob Butt is the Regional Director with the Royal Canadian Legion and tells CHSJ News, they get plenty of help with the campaign.

Canadian Blood Services Move Bad for the Product
The Canadian Blood Services distribution centre moving to Dartmouth is causing concern for a local haematologist.
Dr. Terrence Comeau says the move will have detrimental results as platelets do not have a long enough shelf life to be moved from province to province.
He says by having the centre in Nova Scotia it is going to cause a lot of rework.

What's the Cost of Moving the Canadian Blood Services Distribution Centre?

The Director of Haematology at the Regional Hospital says there is no indication of how much moving the CBS blood distribution centre to Nova Scotia is going to cost.
Dr. James Flick says there has been no information released on how much the province is going to be be paying for the service.
Dr. Flick says if the information is released then it will be known if we need more refridgerators, more trucks, and who is going to be transporting the products.
He says so far there has been no medical or cost justification related to the move.

District 10 Schools Close Because of Absenteeism
Five schools in the St. George area will be closed from tomorrow until Tuesday because of high numbers of absenteeism.
The absenteeism is impacting the availability of bus drivers and staff to supervise students.
The impacted schools are Fundy High, St. George Elementary, Back Bay, Black's Harbour and Pennfield Elementary.

Fibre Optic Cable Cut
The stores are still open but you will need cash if your going to the Lancaster mall to do some shopping. Mall manager Patti Teed tells CHSJ News, a traffic accident sheered a telephone pole and that has left them with-out internet or debit service.
Teed says it could take a few days to rectify.
A spokes-person for Bell-Aliant tells us a fibre optic line has been cut on Catherwoood Street and 2500 of it's customers are with-out a phone or internet service.

J.D. Irving Responds to Power Proposal
Believing this will make the entire forest industry more competitive, J.D. Irving is giving thumbs up to the proposal between NB Power and Hydro-Quebec. Vice-President of the pulp and paper group Mark Mosher tells CHSJ News, the company is confident the future bolds well with this new set-up and is not afraid of someone else running an assett in the Province.
Mosher says from what he has read in the proposal, residents will get more benefit than industry out of this proposal to the tune of 60% over the length of the agreement.

The President of Saint John Energy was at today's news conference concerning NB Power. Eric Marr tells CHSJ News, the entirety of the announcement came as a shock:

Business Council Supports Possible NB Power deal
The New Brunswick Business Council is congratulating the Graham Graham on it's proposal. The N.B.B.C. goes on to say the promise of lower rates and access to abundant green power will help protect jobs and encourage growth and outside investment not only in our manufacturing sector, but also in new emerging sectors.
The Business Council says it is pleased with the proposed rate freezes for commercial and residential users, and the rate reductions for industrial users. Council members are also interested in learning more about how rates will be established and regulated after the initial five-year term.

Political Scientist comments on proposed NB Power sale
Is this proposal political suicide for Premier Graham? That is the question posed to Political Scientist at UNB Saint John Don Desserud who tells CHSJ News, this is shocking move because it will be difficult to sell the proposal to voters.
As for whether or not this opens the door for the Conservatives to make a clean break for re-election to the seat of power, Desserud says no adding they can't sit back and rest but must continue to question this and other moves.

Hydro-Quebec would get the majority of NB Power's assets under a proposed agreement worth nearly $5 billion signed today by Premier Shawn Graham and Quebec Premier Jean Charest. According to the memorandum of understanding, Hydro-Quebec would buy the assets for $4.75 billion _ an amount equivalent to NB Power's debt _ giving Quebec greater capacity to export power to the United States.
Those assets include transmission lines, offices and most generation facilities including the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant. Graham says there will be opportunity for public debate before the closing date of the deal at the end of March 2010.

Rothesay Property is Staying Put
Helen and Kenneth Griffin remain the owners of 10 Scott Avenue. The property is one of several owned by the Griffin's that was supposed to go up for bids at a public auction earlier this week. How-ever the tax bill owing on the property has been payed and remains in the hands of the Griffins. Kenneth tells CHSJ News, he would like to continue owning a property in Rothesay.

Stolen Bike is Recovered
A test drive turned out to be a thief in disguise for the owner of a store in Four Corners yesterday. A man walked into the shop just after noon and took a yellow ATV for a drive but never came back. Nine hours later, Sussex RCMP were called to a complaint of an ATV driving dangerously. The person who called to complain saw the bike go into the drivewayb of a home on Route 121.
Officers knocked on the door and found a red ATV behind the home. The home-owner said he didn't know where the bike came from but officers then noticed the bike had just been freshly painted and was still wet. The owner of the store where a bike was stolen from earlier in the day identified the machine but no word on any charges.

UNBSJ to Offer New Masters Program
UNB Saint John has teamed up with the Certified Management Accountants of New Brunswick to create the first combined Masters of Business Administration and Certified Management Accountants Program in the province. The combined program gives graduates a distinctive edge and will allow them to obtain two credentials quicker and cheaper than if the programs were taken separately.
According to recent member surveys, the average annual salary for a CMA in the province is 95 thousand dollars with three-quarters holding mid-senior management positions.

Film Screening Tonight at Imperial Theatre
A documentary exploring the effects of Global Warming in a small community in the Canadian north will be screened at the Imperial Theatre tonight. Saint Johner Greg Hemmings produced the film Melting Lands and a small version of it called Papikatuk. Hemmings tells CHSJ news the films explore climate change and cultural transformation for the Innuit.
The films have been screened all across Europe and will also be featured at this year's Silver Wave Film Festival in Fredericton next month. Tonight's screen at the Imperial begins at 7pm and donations will be accepted for Romero House.

Armed Robbery on West Side
City police are investigating an armed robbery. This time the Olsen's store on Lancaster Avenue was the target. Police tell CHSJ news a man with a weapon entered the back of the store wearing a mask and dark clothing around 8:50 last night. The store was still open and filled with customers at the time, but an officer says the robber went into the back office to steal money and customers were unaware of what was happening.
No one was injured and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

Gas Prices Breach Dollar Mark
The loonie is up but so too is the price of gas this morning. The Energy and Utilities Board has released its weekly price schedule and regular self-serve gasoline is now up over the dollar mark to a maximum price of 101.5. That's up from 97.6 cents a litre yesterday.
Diesel fuel also costs more today at 103.7, while furnace oil has climbed two-and-a-half cents to 85.3 and propane is now at 89.9 cents per litre.

Home Lottery Ticket Sales

More than half of the tickets in the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation's Hospital Home Lottery have been sold. If all tickets are sold by the Early Bird deadline of November 19th then all 1,250 prizes will be drawn early-- including the draw for the Grand Prize Showhome in Drury Cove.
The Home Lottery is expected to raise more than 700 thousand dollars for the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, New Brunswick Heart Centre and Mindcare.
Peacock Elected
A Saint John community activist has been elected to represent this province's interests with Bayview Credit Union in Atlantic Canada. Kurt Peacock got the post as New Brunswick Board Representative to the Interim Atlantic Central in an election held last weekend in Moncton.
Peacock was formerly with Vibrant Communities and has intervened on behalf of small consumers at Energy and Utility board hearings on proposed NB Power rates increases.

Alternate Side Parking in South Central Peninsula Working Out
Alternate side of the street parking in the South Central Peninsula is a hit.
At tonights Parking Commission presentation residents heard that there was going to be no changes made to parking during the winter.
Resident Ed Reardon tells CHSJ News, that's good news because alternate side parking works great.
Reardon says the main issue with parking during the winter is removing tall snow banks, and the enforcement of illegal parking.
He says often times you will see the same vehicle buried in snow on the side of the street for days on hand, and that's not acceptable.

Winter Management Ward Meetings Coming

The new Deputy Commissioner of Municipal Operations says there are going to be some ward meetings early next month about the Winter Management Plan.
Kevin Rice tells CHSJ News, communicating information to the public is a top priority for the city. He says the ward meetings is the best opportunity to reach the majority of the public.
Rice says the meetings will have information specific to each ward, but there will also be an overview of the entire plan.
He says there are no dates set in stone for the meetings, but says to expect them before November 15th.

Kristopher William Knappe is described as 5 foot 7, weighing 155 pounds with short brownish blond hair with hazel eyes and a goatee. Knappe was last seen wearing blue jeans with a green t-shirt, black hoodie and white sneakers. Police say for medical reasons, they need the public's help in finding the 26-year-old.

Future of NB Power to be Rolled Out
The future look of NB Power will become much clearer tomorrow. Premier Shawn Graham, Quebec Premier Jean Charest, CEO of NB Power David Hay and the CEO of Quebec Hydro will all take the podium. This is for a news conference being referred to as an energy related announcement.
The future of the public utility has been up in the air since word of negotiations between this Province and Quebec were first thrown into the spotlight several weeks ago. It's expected a memorandum of understanding will be announced but Premier Graham has said any deal will be debated before it's signed.
