The cost of higher education keeps increasing leaving parents starting to save earlier for their kids education. Jason Schaella of the Bank of Montreal says the RESP includes a government grant where they contribute a maxium of 500 dollars a year.
He tells CHSJ News anyone, friend or relative, can contribute to a child's RESP as long as it's linked through a social insurance number to a parent or guardian.
Schaella adds the money earned in an RESP is taxed based on the income of the beneficiary who is normally a young person in a zero to low income tax bracket.

Saint John Flies Sunwing

It has been another huge year for Sunwing Vacations at the Saint John Airport. The number of passengers using the service is up 45% from last year. Just over 6000 people used Sunwing to take a flight to Varadero, Cuba or Cancun. Airport President and CEO Bernie Leblanc says he is thrilled with the numbers and has every reason to believe they will be back for a fifth season next year.
No More Handouts

The provincial NDP wants the government to stop giving businesses public money. Leader Roger Duguay uses ATCON from Miramichi as an example, and says when the government gave them public money they knew the company was having financial problems. Duguay says what happens is you give a company public money and then it closes or moves overseas. He says if the company has no interest in developing jobs and opportunities for New Brunswickers, the government should say no.
Uptown Is Booming
The Uptown is alive and well........That's the message the General Manager of Uptown Saint John, Peter Asimakos wants to get out as the first ever Live Life awards are about to be handed out later this month. Asimakos tells CHSJ News you're going to be seeing alot more condos being built. Asimakos says another change that has taken place is the number of restaurants opening up. He claims the uptown is now known as the restaurant area of New Brunswick.
Montreal Refinery Closes
With word out of Montreal this week Shell is closing its 76 year old Refinery, what implications, if any, does this have on the Irving Oil Refinery in East Saint John? Spokesperson Lesley MacLeod tells CHSJ News, it is far too early know what impact there may be on the market share. It also doesn’t impact Irving Oil’s recent decision to shelve a plan for the Eider Rock second refinery and bring them back on the table right now. Shell Canada announced plans in January to close the 76-year-old refinery after unsuccessfully trying to find buyers for six months last year. The Montreal refinery processes more than 130,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
Bicycle Accident
A young boy is dead after what appears to be a tragic accident in the community of Bannon near Hartland this weekend. Late Friday afternoon, RCMP was called to an accident on Route 570 where a nine year old boy was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. Officer say the boy was coming down a driveway when he drove out onto the road and was hit. He was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries. The boys name is not being released and now word yet on any charges.

Holder Says No

Saint John Portland Conservative MLA Trevor Holder says he does not support residential development within Rockwood Park.
Holder tells CHSJ News, once a green-space is designated a park area, it should stay that way.
Holder says City Hall has gone ahead with public consultations on the matter which never included him and he will never support any private members legislation nor bring it forward to see development in the area move ahead.
NDP Comments On Public Engagement

The provincial NDP is jumping on the campaign trail.
Commenting on the Premier's ideas for Public Engagement, NDP leader Roger Duguay says he asks all his candidates to stay connected with their constituents.
He says the Premier is just recognizing his problem after 3 and 1/2 years.
Duguay says no one is against public engagement, but Shawn Graham is trying to win votes.
Charges For Impaired Driving
A 23-year-old man from Allainville was sentenced to 21 months in jail for impaired driving causing death.
Marcel Gionet was convicted in relation to a single vehicle collision last year in Neguac.
Just after 2 a.m. on July 9th on Route 455, Gionet lost control of his vehicle which ended up in the ditch overturned.
An 18-year-old woman from Pont Lafrance died as a result of her injuries.
Gionet is also banned from driving for five years and must provide a DNA sample.

MacIntyre Thrilled With Project

Roly MacIntyre, M-L-A for Saint John East, was at Loch Lomond Villa to turn some sod.
MacIntyre says he's been working on the project for 5 years and he couldn't retire without it done.
MacIntyre says the project will also create about 600 construction related jobs that will employ trade workers for 2 or 3 years until the nursing home is complete.
Sod Turning For Nursing Home

The Loch Lomond Villa is turning sod for a new nursing home.
Chief Executive Director Cindy Donovan says the 75 million dollar project will take place in three parts.
Donovan says, between St. Joseph's and the Regional Hospital, there are roughly 180 people waiting to get into a nursing home, so the 54 new beds the project will create are essential.
She says the new facility will be state of the art and include a cafe, movie theatre, spa and outdoor courtyard.
Trail Maintainence Work
It was not vandalism that knocked down stones in a Rockwood Park trail.
Workers from Leisure Services have been laying down the stones over the last two days because they have not been properly sealed.
Without the right seal, the stones could be easily knocked over and someone could get hurt.
There were reports to our newsroon and to police that the stones were knocked over on purpose by vandals.

Market Square Comes Alive With Torch Relay For Acadian Games

Excitement was in the air at Market Square with 300 enthusiastic young people from Samuel de Champlain parading with the torch that will light the flame when Saint John plays host to the Acadian Games. The opening ceremonies will take place on July 1st and, weather permitting, the athletes will be escorted to the city centre to watch the fireworks display over the harbour. Mayor Ivan Court calls it an opportunity to show Atlantic Canada what is on offer in the city as well as the people who live here.
Court estimates as much as a couple of million dollars will be spent in Saint John during the games which were last staged here in 1996. The Mayor goes on to say the francophone community in the area seemed to come into its own after that event. The theme of the Games will be " Our strength is our energy".
Shrek Glasses Are Re-Called
If you picked up one of the four Shrek Forever glasses recently being offered at McDonalds Restaurants, you will want to stop using it right away.
As a precautionary measure and following consultations with Health Canada, the glasses are being re-called.
The recall comes a day after McDonalds Restaurants in the United States recalled 12 million glasses because the design contains the toxic metal cadmium.
Still no word from the company on how to return them for a refund.
J.D. Irving and Unionized Employees Disagree
The Irving Pulp and Paper Mill is contesting an arbitrators ruling that it cannot randomly test its workers for alcohol.
Unionized employee's grieved the company's policy of random testing which began four years ago, and won in arbitration.
J.D.I. Spokes-person Geoff Britt tells CHSJ News, the company believes the arbitrator erred in his decision and has asked for a judicial review.
Britt adds the policy is in place to ensure the highest standards of safety and performance.
Arguements from both sides were heard in court yesterday but no word on when a decision from the presiding judge will be made.
Alcohol testing is still happening at the mill, but is not random. Our news-room tried to contact union rep Mike MacMullin for his comments but had no luck.
Energy Minister On Point Lepreau

Even though there is no confirmed finish date to the project, the Energy Minister says he is encouraged by the latest word from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited.
The group says the refit job at Point Lepreau is now 75% complete 380 tubes in the heart of the reactor have been replaced, but crews are having trouble getting a proper seal on them.
Jack Keir tells CHSJ News, no one is more concerned about this file than he is.
Keir says in fairness to AECL, it's tough for them to come up with an end date to the project when they are still trying to solve a major issue.
The project is roughly 18 months behind schedule.
Graham Reacts to Corporate Poll

Three months before the Sept. 27 provincial election, the Progressive Conservatives remain in the lead in popular support according to the latest Corporate Research Associates poll.
David Alward's party has 42 per cent support, followed by the Liberals with 37 per cent, the New Democratic Party is third with 16 per cent of the decided vote and the Green Party has five per cent.
Premier Shawn Graham tells CHSJ News, the only poll that counts is the one on Sept.27th and his party never under-estimates what the out-come of an election will be.
36% of those asked are un-decided on who to vote for and the poll has a margin of error of 3.4 per cent, 95 times out of 100.
NB Liquor Picks Up National Award
If you know someone who works for NB Liquor, make sure you say congratulations.
The corporation has picked up a national award from the Retail Council of Canada for retail employee development.
The award was presented to the corporation recently during the Excellence in Retail Awards Dinner.
President and chief executive officer of NB Liquor Dana Clendenning says he is thrilled to have been recognized on a national level.
NB Liquor has more than 600 employees across the Province with most working for an average of 17 years.

One of the problems they face is the real challenge of low incomes and a lack of employment in these disadvantaged communities where people don't think their vote will make a difference and even getting to the polls is not a priority for those trying to get by on little money without jobs or transportation.
Murphy says each of the members will go back to their home bases and look at how the ideas can be incorporated.

Torch Relay In City Today For Acadian Games

Excitement for the lead-up to the Acadian Games will hit a fever pitch today. For the second time in less than a year, Saint John is taking part in a torch relay. The cauldron carrying the flame for the Acadian Games will be escorted into the city this morning by 300 students from Sameul De Champlain and friends and because of the wet weather, the event has been moved inside to Market Square starting at ten o'clock.
The Acadian Games get started on June 30th and run until July 4th with close to 1200 athletes taking part and 1000 volunteers.
Recycling Of Tires In Province Called A Success

A new survey shows the province has one of the best tire recycling program's in Canada. The program is run out of Minto and has recycled over 12 million tires since it started in 1996. Quispamsis Mayor Murray Driscoll is Chair of Recycle NB and tells CHSJ News, 81% of people are aware of the tire recycling program, which is 23% higher than the national average.
Driscoll adds no tires in the province are buried or burned but made into products like shingles, cow mats and playground rubber and 96% of people in this province are happy with how the program is being managed.

Mary Schryer Ready For Another Run

By acclamation, Mary Schryer will carry the Liberal banner seeking re-election in Quispamsis.
With all of the recent headaches for the Liberal Party including the failed NB Power-Hyrdro Quebec deal, CHSJ News asked Schryer if she is worried about being weighed down by baggage the party is carrying and tells us she takes nothing for granted and stands by the party record.
Schryer adds she doesn't know much about her opponents, Conservative Blaine Higgs and Matt Doherty who is running for the NDP.

He says the upgrade is currently expected to take 7 to 10 years to complete, but if the federal government puts forward one third of the cost as well, it might be done in less than 7 years.

Conservative M-L-A Margret-Ann Blaney isn't all smiles after today's announcement.
She says the Premier is making spending announcements and promises to roll back infrastructure spending in the same breath.
Blaney says no one is going to dispute the importance of clean drinking water, but since January the Premier has committed an extra 2 billion dollars in spending.
Water Funding From Liberals

Premier Shawn Graham is promising to help upgrade the city's water system if elected in September.
He says the aging infrastructure needs to be replaced and vows to cover one third of the costs.
When asked if his continual spending announcements will hinder his ability to bring down the provincial deficit by 2014, Graham says you cannot grow an economy without having access to clean drinking water.
Graham says Saint John is a key engine in the economy, and when it does well, New Brunswick does well.
Moose On The Loose Out East
If your ride home takes you to East Saint John, here is something to keep in mind.
There is a moose on the run in the Kanes Corner, Westmoreland and Loch Lomond Road areas and Champlain Heights.
The animal was last seen near Fernhill Cemetery and it has already been hit by one vehicle so it could be injured.
Officials with the Department of Natural Resources are in the area keeping an eye out for the swamp donkey and City Police ask you slow down and keep a sharp eye on the road.

Premier Makes Committment To Help Saint John Fix Its Water Infrastructure

The Premier is calling it the first committment of the 2010 election season.
Shawn Graham is vowing to help the city upgrade its municipal water infrastructure saying when the city is ready to replace its aging water infrastructure, the Liberal government will be there.
The government would cover one-third of the costs associated with the upgrade.
The Premier is speaking at a Board of Trade luncheon at the Delta in Saint John today.
Strategic Plan To Be Unveiled By Airport

Saint John Airport will be unveiling a 5 year strategic plan this month. Airport President and C-E-O Bernard Leblanc tells CHSJ News this will not only lay out a roadmap for future development but will also be letting people know what having an airport means for the region. He admits there is a feeling that many people in the region take the airport for granted.
Leblanc says the Airport would like to see development of alot of its land but is frustrated by the lack of city water and sewage services. He also acknowledges there is a certain degree of competition with the airports in Fredericton and Moncton but it makes no sense to go after the same services.
Education Department on Bullying Summit

The Education Department is looking to set the record straight concerning it's bullying summit in Fredericton later this month.
As we told you yesterday, anit-bullying activist Rob Frenette says he has not been invited to be a member of the panel.
Spokes-person Valerie Kilfoil tells CHSJ News, there are two seperate panels for the meeting and no line-up has been finalized with numerous requests to be on the panel and they simply can't accomodate everyone.
Kilfoil adds they are trying to put together a panel that represents all the different perspectives when it comes to bullying and Frenette's name is still out there as someone interested in being a panel member.
The summit is scheduled for June.17th.
Gas Prices Are Up In City
Saint John drivers will be paying a little more today when you fill up. The price of self serve regular in the city has risen by more than a cent a litre to 96.7 cents and diesel is up by more than 2 cents to $1.00.8 a litre. Propane has gone down slightly to $1.01.6 and heating oil is at 88 cents.

Roger Duguay, who's leading the Provincial NDP these days, is very happy with the nomination of Doherty in Quispamsis. He sees the fact the party already has four candidates for the fall election as a sign the New Democrats are up and running again. Duguay thinks the N-D-P has had a chance to reorganize itself since Elizabeth Weir stepped down as party leader. He concedes the party has suffered a falling out since Weir left but he claims they've had five years to recover and get reorganized.
New Democrats In Quispamsis Chopose Their Candidate For Provincial Vote
The Provincial N-D-P has nominated its fourth candidate for the September election. Matt Doherty will be running in the riding of Quispamsis and says people in the province are at a crossroads. He says 70% of the Conservatives running this time around are the same people who got voted out in the 2006 election.
He says this election won't be just another flip flop between the Conservatives and the Liberals. Doherty says the big local issue he wants to tackle is the rising property tax assessments and warns the province is going to see a drunken spending spree from the Liberals and Conservatives leading up to the election but is hoping people won't be taken in and allow their votes to be bought.
Health Minister To Be Nominated Again Without Opposition

Liberals in Quispamsis meet tonight to nominate their incumbant MLA for Quispamsis who is also Health Minister, Mary Schryer to run in the September 27th provincial election.
She's the only candidate seeking the nomination and is expected to be acclaimed.
The Premier will be on hand at the event at the Meenan's Cove Beach House. The event gets started at 7:00.
Saint John 225 To Take Centre Stage At City Market
Here is a suggestion for part of your lunch hour today...a mysterious event is coming up in the City Market. It's part of Saint John's 225 celebration.
The "performance" should take about 5 minutes and requires the Market's centre aisle to be closed.
After the event, an announcement will be made outside the City Market on Germain Street.
It all gets started at 12:20pm at the Market.
Enbridge Gas Hopes To Double Its Customer Base
Enbridge Gas New Brunswick has over 10,000 customers in communities from St. Stephen to Dieppe but, how will they expand their customer base?
General Manager Dave Charleson tells CHSJ News they want to double their numbers of customers in the next decade. Charleson adds they offer incentives of up to 3 thousand dollars to combat the high costs of converting from baseboard heating to natural gas heat.
He adds it can be done for as little as 15 hundred dollars with a centrally heated home but concedes those homes with electric baseboard heating are more of a challenge to convert financially for their owners.

Air Quality Results for 2008 in Greater Saint John
The air is getting cleaner in Greater Saint John according to the latest numbers from the 2008 Air Quality Monitoring Results.
At all five monitoring sites, both carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide levels are well below or did not go past the one hour, 24 hour or yearly objectives.
Sulphur Dioxide levels were not as favourable, up over the exceptable level one time at the Forest Hills Site on July.30th of 2008 for the hourly rate and at the Grandview Avenue West site for the one hour objective as well.
The number of times Sulphur Dioxide levels jumped over the acceptable daily level at the GrandView Avenue West site is up from 11 to 68 in 2008.
It's important to note how-ever, all of the spikes happened before the Irving Oil Refinery installed a new piece of equipment to capture So2.
In the Coleson Cove Area, there were no spikes of sulphur dioxide.

Old Business Getting a Make-Over
A full inspection is being carried out at the former Ultramar Gas Station on Somerset Street.
Former Owner and Liberal Candidate for Saint John Portland Danny Joyce tells CHSJ News, an inspection team has been brought in to dig up the under-ground tanks and scour the property for an fuel or oil leaks.
There is also a contractor on site that will do any needed renovations and the put the property up for sale.
Joyce says his son Brad has an application in to buy the property and open a garage but first has plans to attend community college to complete his training.
Former Owner and Liberal Candidate for Saint John Portland Danny Joyce tells CHSJ News, an inspection team has been brought in to dig up the under-ground tanks and scour the property for an fuel or oil leaks.
There is also a contractor on site that will do any needed renovations and the put the property up for sale.
Joyce says his son Brad has an application in to buy the property and open a garage but first has plans to attend community college to complete his training.

Exhibition Association Survey Results Are In
Officials with the Exhibition Association are now going over survey results they asked for last month.
The questions to home-owners in Greater Saint John revolved around what they think should be the future look of the exhibition grounds in East Saint John.

Mayor Wants Big Change In Future Development Of City

Mayor Ivan Court is calling for a plan of action from the planning department as the city comes up with a new municipal plan to guide future development in the city. The Mayor says the time may have come to restrict residential development from taking place in the more remote areas of the city.
Court says the cost of not only installing municipal water and sewage is high but to maintain that infrastructure is escalating. He wants to see as many people as possible use the existing infrastructure so the taxpayer gets the best bang for its buck.
Clean Air Day Marked In Province
This is Clean Air Day. Enbridge Gas maintains those people who have opted for natural gas over the past decade have reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by over a million tons which would be the same as taking more than 180 thousand cars off the road. Gordon Dalzell of the Clean Air Coalition tells CHSJ News Saint John is still saddled with a reputation as a smelly city and points to the odour which is emitted from Marsh Creek as a prime example. He claims getting rid of those offensive smells would help Saint John increase the number of people living in the city.
Dalzell also agrees with the Conservation Council that air pollution increases the risk of various cancers.
First Ever Live Life Awards To Be Handed Out In City
A first for Uptown Saint John. General Manager Peter Asimakos tells CHSJ News the Live Life awards to celebrate living in the uptown will be handed out June 24th at the Saint John Theatre Company in 12 different categories which will include best retail, best restaurant, new business of the year, residential space of the year and event of the year.
Nominations can be made online to Uptown Saint John until June 18th. Tickets for the event will cost 35 dollars. The Saint John Theatre company itself took over a building on Princess Street which was on the verge of collapsing from the roof on down and renovated it.
More Details Released On Boat Fire In Kennebecasis River
The Fire Department getting a call from the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club late yesterday afternoon about a boat being on fire. District Fire Chief Eric Garland says initially they thought the boat was still on land but this turned out not to be the case. The boat was in the Kennebecasis River attempting to get back to the yacht club. The fire department's water rescue unit was called into action. The Coast Guard and other boats that happened to be out and about also came to help.
The fire turned out to be an overheated motor. The boat was escorted back to the yacht club and no one was hurt.

Public Meeting To Be Held On Deer Problem In Valley

Word that the Department of Natural Resources is increasing the number of anterless deer that can be killed to 15 hundred this fall is good news for the Mayor of Quispamsis. Murray Driscoll tells CHSJ News, town officials realize the deer population is a major problem.
Driscoll says education is still a big part of alleviating the problem and is not ruling out putting in place a bylaw to not feed the animals. An open house to discuss lyme disease carried by ticks on deers will be held at the Town Hall on Monday night.
New Democrats To Unveil Their Candidate Tonight In Quispamsis
With only one candidate, the NDP nomination meeting for the riding of Quispamsis tonight shouldn't take long. Matt Doherty is the only person who has come forward to fly the flag and will take the position by acclamation. The riding is currently held by MLA and Health Minister Mary Schryer. Party Leader Roger Duguay is one of the guest speakers with things to get started at 7pm at the Amsterdam Inn.

Boat Docks Safely
A close call on the Kennebecasis River late this afternoon after a boat caught fire in the Western channel.
The was in the boat's engine compartment and was extinguished by the time the Saint John Fire Rescue reached it in the western channel.
No one was injured and the boat is safely docked backed at the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club.

Maritime Concertgoers Have Options In Halifax This Summer
The remaining line-up for Halifax Rocks 2010 has been announced with Kid Rock headlining the July.23rd show to open the two day festival. He will be joined by the Counting Crows, Daughtry and Tonic. Local artists the Stanfields and the Jimmy Swift Band are also on the ticket. On Saturday, Weezer, Classified and the Black Eyed Peas will take to the stage.

RCMP With a Successful Road Safety Week
RCMP is celebrating a successful Road Safety Week.
In 98 check-stops, 22,000 vehicles were looked over and found 36 impaired drivers, 116 people were fined for not wearing a seat-belt and 303 people received a ticket for agressive driving or speeding.
Unfortunately, two people were killed on provincial highways and ten were injured.
At the largest checkstop conducted on the Trans Canada Highway near Salisbury, officers made three drug seizures totalling 75 pounds of marijuana. 30,000 contraband cigarettes were also found.
Scholarships For Medical Students

Students studying medicine in the province have one million new reasons to stay at home.
The Friends of the Christofor Foundation have donated 1 million dollars to the New Brunswick Medical Education Trust.
Chair Donald Craig says the money will be used towards $12,000 bursaries for students who want to practice medicine in the province.
With 50% of the province's doctors near retiring age, Craig says it is vital to keep young doctors practicing in New Brunswick.

More Details Released On Violent Domestic Assault
A 32 year old woman remains in hospital after undergoing surgery following a violent domestic assault early this morning in the Latimore Lake Trailer Park. Sergeant Pat Bonner says a 31 year old man was later arrested by Police but not without some bother. He was in a van at the corner of Bayside Drive and Loch Lomond Road when the chase began. It ended more than 8 kilometers later when the van went out of control on Hickey Road off Grandview Avenue but the suspect wasn't injured. Police also blame road rage for the Causeway being closed in both directions yesterday morning. A 28 year old man is looking at charges of making threats and drug possession.

Friday is the deadline to sign up for a one day workshop June 12th to help chart the city's future with the development of a new municipal plan. Common Councillor Chris Titus argues a better result will come with more realistic forecasts of how many people will be living in the city. He says there were earlier forecasts of Saint John having as many as 200 thousand people by now which clearly never happened.
The workshop, divided into two sessions, will be held at Harbourview High. You can sign up online, in person at the Plan SJ storefront in Brunswick Square or by calling 635-2000.
Political Future Still Alive

John Campbell's name may appear on the ballot of the September Provincial Election yet.
After losing the Conservative nomination for Saint John Harbour by four votes, a group is trying to convince Campbell to run as an independent.
A petition is being circulated to show Campbell there is support for the move. Campbell tells CHSJ News, he really wasn't suprised he lost by such a close margin.
Campbell says the petition currently carries two hundred names and if there were 500, that would be a strong indicator for him running as an independent is the right thing to do.
Campbell adds if he does run as an independent, he will contact Conservative Leader David Alward to announce his intentions.
Restoring Long Wharf

With-in the next two weeks, the restoration of Long Wharf is expected to get started.
Close to 300 pilings that were driven into the ground as part of pre-construction work by Fort Reliance's office tower, will be capped and paved over.
Captain Al Soppitt with the Saint John Port Authority tells CHSJ News, its time to move on and map out a future for the site.
Soppitt adds there is no start or finish time for the restoration job but there is no rush with the first cruise ship not due to dock at Long Wharf until September.

After dropping the speed limit from 60 to 50kilometers a few years ago, the push continues to get vehicles to slow down along Rothesay Avenue.
A variable radar board has been installed on one of the speed limit signs near Ritchies.
Manager of pedestrian and traffic services Timothy O'Reilly tells CHSJ News, most vehicles coming off the highway usually are going way over the posted limit.
O'Reilly says the sign will be turned on in the coming weeks but right now, they are using it to monitor how fast vehicles are going.

Arrest Made In Violent Assault
City Police report a violent assault took place on the east side. One woman is in hospital and a man is in jail facing charges after what police say was a domestic dispute that escalated into violence at Latimore Lake. The woman's injuries are not described as life threatening.
K-V-H-S Triumphs At Reach For The Top
The Kennebecasis Valley High School Reach for the Top Team is taking home the top prize at the National Championships. Coach Jason Thorne says Cobequid Educational Centre, the team from Nova Scotia, they played in the final, gave them a run for their money.
But after the final round of questions the score was 330 points for K-V-H-S and 290 for Cobequid. Thorne says after coming 2nd or 3rd for the last couple of years, the win meant so much more. It was the first time in Reach for the Top history that both teams in the final were from the Maritimes.

Trauma Care Line Stirs Debate

It was unveiled back in February but still no sign of the Province's new toll free trauma line. It is part of the new co-ordinated trauma system designed to connect emergency rooms so physicians can communicate. The start up date was April.1st but is now on hold until the end of the month. Opposition Health Critic and Rothesay Conservative MLA Margaret Ann Blaney tells CHSJ News, a glossy flyer which has been handed out in Schryer's riding since April says the phone line has been established. Blaney adds she is confused about how a comprehensive truama system can be put in place with no 1-800 set-up and a director who spends the majority of his time in Quebec.
But work is continuing on the 1-800 trauma line according to the Administrative Director for the Provincial Trauma Program Ian Watson who tells CHSJ News, they are working to get emergency departments up to speed on how it will work.
Watson adds it is fair to say the line should be up and running by this month but he points outgood quality trauma care is already in place at hospitals around the province.
Local Soldiers To Be Honoured
38 members of the Canadian Forces including three from this Province are being awarded medals from the Governor General. The Medal of Military Valour has been awarded to Corporal Richard Anderson who back on January.31st of last year, put his own life at risk to save the life of an Afghan Soldier while under attack in the Zhari District. Meritorious Service Medals are being awarded to Master Warrant Officer Eric Rolfe of Oromocto and Major Russell Washburn of St. George.
Both are being honored for their outstanding work and dedication while deployed in Afghanistan between September of 2008 and the spring of 09. No date on when the ceremony will be held.

Pastor Wants To Run For N-D-P In Saint John Harbour.
A candidate for the provincial N-D-P nomination in Saint John Harbour has come forward. Wayne Dryer has been living in the South End for 27 years and is the pastor at Germain Street United Baptist Church. He also worked as a recreation supervisor at the South End Community Centre. Dryer says his immediate goal is to achieve the highest voter turnout in the province and help rebuild voter faith in representative democracy. No nomination date has been set for the riding. The riding has been held since 2005 by Liberal cabinet minister Dr. Ed Doherty. The Conservatives last week chose as their candidate, Common Councillor and St. Malachy's high school teacher Carl Killen.
Drivers Nabbed In Roadside Checks By City Police
Road Safety Week numbers are in from the Saint John Police Force. Out of the 17,000 vehicles checked last week, there were ten drunk drivers and 95 tickets handed out for various motor vehicle infractions.
14 roadside check areas and two commercial vehicle enforcement check points were set up and two people were also caught for driving with a suspended license.

Community Colleges Split
Minister for Post-Secondary Education Donald Arseneault is announcing major changes to the province's community colleges.
The New Brunswick Community College and the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick are now managing separate English and French institutions.
He says the split will allow for more funding from the federal government and the private sector.
The province decided the split would better represent the French and English communities.

Alward Responds to Minister's Accusations
An accusation by the Energy Minister is being called a lie by Conservative Leader David Alward. Jack Keir says if elected in the September vote, the Conservatives will consider moving the energy department back to Fredericton.
Alward tells CHSJ News, he is also confused about Keir saying former President of the Provincial Conservative Party Lisa Keenan is questioning the relevance of having the energy department in Saint John because the conversation never happened.
Alward says these accusations do nothing to promote what both parties need to be talking about when it comes to energy and it's future role.
