Seadogs Win Game Three of Presidents Cup Final

The Saint John Seadogs offence finally came alive last night as they beat Moncton 6-4 in Game Three of the Presidents Cup Final.


Mike Hoffman had four points including the game winner into an empty net.

Dogs Head Coach Gerard Gallant says his team locked up the lanes to keep Moncton from setting up.


Gallant is referring to Moncton scoring three goals in just over five minutes to make it a 5-4 game with just under three minutes left to play.
Wildcats Head Coach and GM Danny Flynn says Saint John has plenty of fire power but is happy with how his team battled back to close the lead to one.


Moncton still leads the set 2-1 with Game Four on Friday in Moncton and Game Five Saturday at Harbour Station.


Tickets for Saturday's game go on sale tomorrow at ten at the Harbour Station Box Office.

New Parking Set-Up at Parlee Beach

Seeing that today feels like the first day of summer, a reminder to anyone heading to Parlee Beach in the coming months.


It will use a new automated parking system for this tourism season.


Visitors will take a ticket upon entry and pay for their parking at one of two pay stations before leaving.


Debit, credit card and cash will all be accepted.


Daily passes will cost $10 and season passes are $82.

Dates For Rate Hearing Set

The 22nd and 23rd of next month is when a hearing ordered by Energy Minister Jack Keir will get started.


The Energy and Utilities Board will go over the proposed rate increase of three per cent by NB Power.


A hearing isn't required for three per cent or under but Minister Keir has asked the EUB to review the rate hike.


NB Power must have all of it's documentation filed by noon on the 28th.


Saint John Energy has announced it's rate is going up by three per cent as of June.1st.


The hearing will be held at the Delta.

Update on Cemetery Investigation

City Police tell us they are still working on making an arrest as work to repair close to 500 headstones in St. Josephs Cemetery continues.


It was just over a week ago, that officers were called to the graveyard to find the headstones had been kicked or pulled off their base and damaged.


Sargeant Pat Bonner tells CHSJ News, they are still investigating leads.

Workers at the cemetery tell us the repair work is slow going and will take weeks to finish.

Another Phone Scam Making the Rounds

Another phone scam is making the rounds.


CO-OP Atlantic has issued the heads up after receiving calls about someone claiming to be from it's organization.


The caller says you have won $25,000 dollars and must come to a specific adress to claim the prize.


Co-OP tells us they are not running any contest with a cash prize and if you do receive this type of call, call police or RCMP right away.

Nine municipalities purchase software to help in Emergencies

Nine municipalities are now able to alert 14,000 households in an hour when an emergency strikes thanks to a new software program. The communities located between Saint John and Sussex Corner are sharing the cost of the $111,000 system. Manager of the Saint John Emergency Management Organization Murielle Provost says the program will make people more aware when an emergency is taking place.


The software was purchased from Bathurst-based company Sentinel Systems Ltd. which is the only company doing this type of work in Canada.

Tenders awarded for new Maintainence facility in St. Stephen

The Province has awarded about $4.7 million in contracts for a new Department of Transportation maintenance facility in St. Stephen.
Premier Shawn Graham made the announcement today during a tour of the construction site on Church Street in the St. Stephen Industrial Park.


Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet tells CHSJ News this announcement is an investment in the safety of Charlotte county and the region.

Doucet says the work will get started soon and he expects it will be finished by the fall.

Game Three of the Presidents Cup Final

The Saint John Seadogs are looking to get back into the Presidents Cup Final tonight. Down two games to none against Moncton, Game Three goes tonight at the Station.


Dogs Head Coach Gerard Gallant says the philosophy is simple heading into tonight's match-up........WIN.


Wildcats Head Coach and General Manager Danny Flynn says this series is far from over.


Flynn says Des-champs condition is day to day and still no word on if he will be in the line-up tonight. Game time at the Station is seven o'clock.

Search is on For Volunteers

The Sexual Assault Response Team of the Community Health Centre wants to put together a team of dedicated volunteers to assist victims.


The volunteers advocat and offer support to victim's in the aftermath of sexual assault. Terry Albright tells CHSJ News, the training is intensive.


Training for the next session starts June 4th with the deadline for applications being the 24th of this month.

Power Outage On East Side

Most people were probably asleep at the time but if you live on the east side and wake up to find your electronic alarm clock flashing there's a very good reason for that. There was an early morning power outage. Saint John Energy crews managed to restore the power at about 1:15 after completing repairs.

Fire crews respond to smell of natural gas

The City's fire department responding to the west side this afternoon where someone thought they smelled natural gas.
The Hazmat team was called in to assist at the end of City line near the Bayshore railyard.

Crews investigating near the railway cars found a product that is used to supress smell was used on a tank. It was cleaned up.

No one was hurt.

Volunteers needed to assist victims of Sexual Assault

It's the kind of volunteering that would not be for everyone.

Terry Albright of The Sexual Assault Response Team is trying to organize a team of dedicated volunteers to assist victims of sexual assault.
Albright says the volunteer's role is to be an advocat for the victim.
They would accompany the victim through a hospital examination if they are wanted there.

The next session's training starts the first weekend of June and continues over three weekends.

The Canadian Hockey League has just released 300 tickets for tomorrow night's Game Three of the Presidents Cup Final tomorrow night. To get your hands on some, you can drop by the box office at the Station, go on-line at www.tickets.harbourstation.ca or call them at 657-1234.


Moncton leads the Seadogs 2-0 in the best of seven final. Game Time tomorrow night is seven o'clock.

City Can't Afford To Pay For Convention Centre Facelift On Its Own

The exact cost isn't known yet but renovating the Trade and Convention Centre will cost something like 9 million dollars. With the other funding commitments, City Manager Pat Woods concedes for this to happen, the federal and provincial governments will have to step up to the plate and help.
A business case has been put together by the city with the help of Enterprise Saint John. Moncton will soon be opening up a new convention centre adjacent to the gambling casino which will be up and running tomorrow. Saint John will face even more competition when Fredericton's new convention centre opens.

Saint John Behind the Eight Ball Headed Home

Things got ugly both on and office the ice for the Seadogs in the Presidents Cup Final. Moncton scored early and often today en-route to a 9-3 spanking of Saint John and 2-0 series lead.

In the dying seconds of the game, Moncton Head Coach and GM Danny Flynn pulled starting goalie Nicola Riopel which sent Dogs Head Coach Gerard Gallant lunging at the Moncton bench.

Gallant says this is the second game in a row this has happened and there is no reason for it.


As for Flynn, he says the move was no reflection on the Dogs staff or players he just wanted to make sure there were no goal mouth collisions that would see Riopel get hurt.


When asked what went wrong, Gallant simply answered Moncton.

So far, the Wildcat has out-scored Saint John 14-4 in the series. Game Three goes tomorrow night, seven o'clock at the Station.

Are You Prepared For Emergencies?

It's Emergency Preparedness Week and the Emergency Management office wants Saint Johnners to learn three simple steps: know your risks, make a plan and get a kit. Manager of EMO Murielle Provost tells CHSJ news this week is about awareness and preparedness. She reminds Saint Johnners an emergency doesn't have to be a flood or a tornado, it can also be a simple power-outage or storm. People are encouraged to always have 72 hours worth of supplies in case of an emergency, including flashlights, batteries, radio, food and water. There will be a contest this week where the prize is a pre-packed emergency kit.
An information booth will be set up in Brunswick Square Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 11 am and 2pm. People are encouraged to come out and get tips from the Week's mascot, Preparedness Patti.

Senator Mike Duffy In Saint John Speaking Out on Afghanistan And Freedom Of Speech

Free speech and the Afghan Detainee issue are two topics on Conservative Senator Mike Duffy's mind. Duffy was the keynotes speaker at the Radio-Television News Directors Association Conference in Saint John this weekend. He says free speech in Canada is under attack from the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council acting on behalf of the C-R-T-C which regulates TV and radio stations.
Duffy also says he finds it hard to believe people think Stephen Harper is hiding something in the Afghanistan documents. He says Parliment has been more involved in Afghanistan than in any other war.

Saint John to commemorate Battle of the Atlantic

Saint John's Naval Reserve Unit will commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic today.

A ceremony will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception beginning at ten.

Following the ceremony, sailors from HMCS BRUNSWICKER and the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets will parade from Waterloo street to Market slip where there will be a wreath laying ceremony at 12:10 p.m.

This World War II Naval Battle took place between September 1939 and May 1945.

Game Two of Cats vs. Dogs to begin at 4pm

The Presidents Cup Final switches to Moncton this afternoon for Game Two.

The Wildcats punished the Seadogs in the opener with a stifling defence on their way to a 5-1 win.

Cats Head Coach and GM Danny Flynn says Saint John is the best team they have seen all year.

Seadogs Head Coach Gerard Gallant says one of the areas his team needs to focus on is winning face-offs.

He says he juggled the line-up late in Game One but doesn't expect any drastic changes today.

Game time this afternoon is four o'clock at the Coliseum.
