The Greater Saint John SPCA is facing a closure this time next week.
That's unless it can get around a million dollars to pay for the 296 Bayside Drive building and for operational costs. In an e-mail, President Melody McElman says the new move, mounting debt, low donations and no steady revenue stream all piled up. And with more animals than adoptions, McElman says the community can't go without a shelter.
Just a few months ago their executive director was laid off to help cut costs. McElman says the non-profit shelter costs about $46,000 dollars a month to run. She says if anyone wants to help they can donate, give corporate sponsorship, third party fundraising or volunteer.
Unless there is a huge influx of cash, the shelter will close its doors at 5:00pm on Saturday, September 8th, and 14 staff members will be jobless.
