Growing Male Marijuana Plants Is Still Illegal

Newsflash: growing marijuana is still illegal, no matter whether the plants are male or female--and a 26 year old Saint John man learned that lesson the hard way in court this morning.

Police received a call to a home on Lakeside Road about a noise complaint. Benjamin Peter Diprose invited officers in to show them there was no problem--but in a bathroom officers discovered 30g worth of marijuana plants growing in Styrofoam cups

Diprose told officers the plants were legal because they were male plants which don't contain a useable about of THC. Judge Henrik Tonning disagreed, and still gave Diprose a 1-year conditional discharge and ordered him to donate $500 to the DARE program.
