As part of the changes, the city is proposing in a new relationship with the provincial government, Mayor Mel Norton is not talking about the city having the power to impose new taxes but does want to see more of the commercial taxes collected from Saint John businesses stay here.
Norton says about half of the commercial tax money leaves the city. He tells CHSJ News the city would be better off keeping more of that and having less or even no unconditional grant money from the provincial government.
