Councilor Wants Presentation at Common Council

City Councilor Peter McGuire says common council needs to see the presentation on criminal investigations by Deputy Chief Scribner.
McGuire, who is also a member of the Board of Police Commissioners, says the cost of a typical investigation would be an eye opener for council.
He says if council sees the numbers maybe there will be more they can do.

As time goes on crimes become more elaborate, and investigating those crimes becomes more complex and expensive.
Saint John Police Deputy Chief Darryl Scribner presented the anatomy of criminal investigations and the cost.
Scribner says costs of surveillance, man hours, and paperwork adds up quickly, and it's important to choose the right case at the right time.

Scribner says almost all crimes can be traced back to drugs, specifically prescription drugs like Oxycontin in this city.

A new guide to setting up renewable energy projects in the province is being introduced by the Department of Energy.
Minister Jack Keir says the New Brunswick Developer's Guide to Renewable Energy will act as an important resource tool for developers seeking to invest in the province.
The guide will outline the regulatory processes, and other information needed to set up renewable energy projects in the province.


New Procedure Coming to the Regional Hospital

Cardiac surgeons will be performing a new procedure tomorrow at the New Brunswick Heart Centre.
Doctors at the Regional Hospital will begin using a minimally invasive procedure to treat coronary artery disease.
A presentation will get underway tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock by Dr. Marc Pelletier outlining the benefits of the procedure.


Port Authority Reaction to First Cruise Day

Saint John Port Authority President Captain Al Soppitt tells CHSJ News, so far operations with the first cruise ship of the season is running smoothly.
Soppitt says passenger flow is moving along, and the general comments from tourists are positive about the new terminal.

Soppitt says so far there hasn't been any issues come up with the terminal, but if any were to arise, they would take them on as they come.

Cruise ship passengers are out and about in the uptown area with the arrival of the Carnival Triumph.
CEO and President of Princess Cruises Alan Buckelew says the city has some of the best tourist services he's seen at any port.
Buckelew says the welcoming nature of Saint Johners will help bring more cruise ship passengers in the future.
He says cruising is a unique vacation experience because when everyone gets home they want to share their experiences with their friends and family and encourage them to take a cruise to a city like Saint John.


Adoption Workshop Tonight at the Saint John Arts Centre

A workshop for families involved in adoption is being held tonight at the Saint John Arts Centre. Several adoption associations have joined together to invite adoptive parents and those interested in adoption to a discussion on post adoption support. Kim Stevens of the North American Council on Adoptable Children tells CHSJ news parents will get some strategies for dealing with the issues of adopted children.

The Premier's wife, and Board Member of the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation, Roxanne Reeves, will also make a guest appearance. Tonight's workshop takes place at 6:30pm at the Saint John Arts Centre.


Operation Carleton Leads to Five Arrests

Five people have been arrested during police Operation Carleton over the past month in the lower West Side. Saint John police conducted the operation as a result of community concerns and input from local residents.

Charges include break and enter, vandalism, drugs, court order violations, and probation violations. More charges are expected.


Three Arrested for Theft at Millidge Avenue McDonalds

City Police have arrested three people in connection with a break and enter at the Millidge Avenue McDonalds Restaurant on Sunday. A large sum of money was stolen from the safe after someone climbed through the drive-thu window.  Two youths and one man in his twenties have been charged with break and enter and theft--and--are due to appear in court at a later date.

One of the boys arrested was employed at the restaurant.


Atlantica Centre for Energy Adds Three Companies to its Board

Three companies have joined the Atlantica Centre for Energy Board. ADI, Corridor Resources, and Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline will each have a representative around the table. Also, appointed to the Centre’s Board is UNBSJ Vice-President Dr. Robert MacKinnon and ACOA Senior Energy Advisor Andrew Noseworthy.

The centre aims to make the opportunities associated with the energy hub a reality.


Chocolate Museum Opens for Business

Canada's Chocolate town has plenty to smile about after the re-opening of the Chocolate museum in St Stephen yesterday. Chairman David Ganong says this provides a unique state-of -state tourist attraction in the heart of downtown St Stephen. Ganong says it took ten years for the planning and detail work of the museum.

This expansion will give the Chocolate museum more flexibility and space for school trips, tour bus and group visits. The 875 thousand dollar project was funded through the federal, provincial and municipal governments, along with the Ganong company.


Marigold Magic in the Valley Today

The first Annual Marigold Magic in the Valley taking place this morning in Rothesay and Quispamsis. About 400 children from five local schools are spending the morning planting flowers and seeds throughout the community.

Meanwhile, Marigolds on Main Street takes place tomorrow morning in Saint John. About one thousand students and hundreds of volunteers, teachers and city staff will be on hand to add the colour of beautiful flowers in the area. Organizer Barry Ogden says they've planted over 1.8 million marigolds in more than 51 sites since the project started 12 years ago.


Sussex Man Arrested for Credit Card Fraud

One man has been arrested in connection with a stolen credit card in Sussex. A 59 year old woman had reported the card stolen and more than one thousand dollars was taken in cash advances. RCMP say an investigation has led to the arrest of a 40 year old Sussex man. He is due in court at a later date.


Two Women Rescued After Attempt to Cross to Partridge Island

Two women are safe and sound after being rescued by the Canadian Coast Guard early this morning from the break water to Partridge Island. Police tell CHSJ news the women were crossing the rocks at around 2am when one twisted an ankle and they phoned for help. The Coast Guard sent out a boat to transport the women to Long Wharf.

Meanwhile, one woman taken to hospital around one o'clock this morning with minor injuries after rolling her car on the airport arterial. Police say the 49 year old woman was trying to avoid an animal when she lost control and landed in the ditch. Four young men stopped to help her out of the car before emergency crews arrived.

And traffic along Highway One near Spruce Lake was slowed down for about seven hours last night after 50 gallons of hydraulic fluid was spilled along the shoulder of the road. The Department of Transportation was on scene cleaning up the mess from about 5pm until midnight. No word on the cause of the spill.


Rothesay Mayor Supports Tri-Level Emergency Response

Rothesay Mayor Bill Bishop is hoping a pilot project for tri-level emergency response gets the approval of Health Minister Mike Murphy. Bishop tells CHSJ News he wants to see the return of the previous system in how emergency calls are handled.

He says the recent death of a New Brunswicker due to a long response time played role in suggesting the project and that he has the full support of Saint John Mayor Ivan Court and Quispamsis Mayor Murray Driscoll.
