Four Arrested In Three-Month Drug Investigation

A three-month police investigation leading to the arrest of four people and the seizure of nearly 35 pounds of pot and $16,000 in cash.

RCMP say in October, a 46-year old man and a 45-year old woman both from Saint John were arrested and two and a half pounds of weed were seized from a home in Carter's Point.

Two vehicles were intercepted in Lincoln last week and 15 pounds of marijuana were seized along with more than $14,000 in cash. A 58-year old man and 60-year old woman both from Woodstock being arrested and the 45-year old woman who was arrested in October was arrested again. A search of a residence in Woodstock turned up 18 pounds of marijuana and $1500 in cash.

All four are expected to appear in court at a later date.

UPDATE: Snook Gets An Additional 3 Months In Jail

Donnie Snook gets an extra three months in jail on three sex charges stemming from when he was living in Newfoundland.

The jail time is in addition to the 18 year sentence he received in Saint John for crimes against children.

Snook appearing in a City courtroom today looking thin, with a goatee and a shaved head.

There were four charges originally but one was withdrawn because the victim was 14 at the time. Snook's lawyer Dennis Boyle says his client's participation in this was minimal adding it was his first sexual experience as an adult.

The Crown wanted Snook to get a year for each of the new charges to which he pleaded guilty.

Pensioners Could Get Cost Of Living Increase

It might not entirely quell their fears about the Shared Risk Plan--but retirees who had been receiving pensions under the Public Service Superannuation Act could receive a cost-of-living increase in 2014 equal to 100 per cent of the inflation rate under the new plan.

The cost-of-living increase will depend, however, on how well the plan is funded, but in a release Finance Minister Blaine Higgs claims the new plan is designed in such a way that the likelihood of providing annual cost-of-living increases is very high. Effective Jan. 1, 2014, retirees' pensions will increase by 0.96 per cent  based on the average change in inflation.

Higgs says if a shared risk model had been adopted 20 years ago, the cost-of-living increases  retirees received would have been the same as what they were under the former plan.

City-Wide Crackdown Leads To 29 Arrests

A special operation known as Operation Sweep 2 has been bitter news for the local criminal element.

Sergeant Jay Henderson of the Saint John Police Department explains they reassigned officers from their regular detachments and formed a special unit to undertake Operation Sweep 2.

In total, 29 people from all over the city were arrested and charged with over 103 criminal charges including weapons offences, drug dealing, and assaults. 

Over $102,000 in drugs and cash were also seized.

Threats On Facebook Lead To Arrest Of Teen & Other Crimes

A few items from the police blotter today--a 26 year old man was arrested on Broad Street after breaking into a home and passing out on the couch. He's being held in provincial court to answer to charges.

Threats on social media are nothing to be taken lightly, as a 17 year old girl from one of the uptown high schools has learned.The teen was been arrested after making threats via Facebook. She will be appearing in youth court at a later date.

And at around 4pm yesterday police received a call to the Trade and Convention Center area about some teenagers who had been sprayed with a pepper-spray like substance. When they arrived, several teenagers were showing symptoms of having been sprayed and made their way to the hospital.

Police say this wasn't a random act and they have a suspect in mind.

Police Confirm Identity Of Body Discovered

City Police cordoned off an area by the train bridge on Chesley Drive late yesterday afternoon as you turn left off Hilyard Street towards the former Acadian Lines bus station.  Yellow police tape could be seen.

Searchers who were out looking for 17 year old Gavin Adams came across a body late yesterday afternoon.
 
Police have now confirmed the body is that of the teen who was reported missing late Sunday afternoon. 

Adams was last seen Saturday night in the area of Chesley Drive. Police don't suspect foul play but are awaiting the medical report on cause of death.

Not Everyone Obeyed Parking Ban For Snow Removal

There's been a lot of activity taking place overnight in the South-Central Peninsula with city crews removing snow from the streets. 

A ban on parking was declared yesterday by the city until 7 this morning but apparently not everyone got the word. 

Police tell CHSJ News at least 16 vehicles have been towed and counting.

City Budget Coming Up For Vote Tonight

Common Council will be voting tonight on the 2014 city budget with revenues essentially unchanged and spending going up by one half of one per cent. The tax rate will remain stable at $1.79. 

Councillors are being asked to spend 6.75 million dollars on roads and 1.25 million on sidewalks. Councillor at Large Shirley McAlary is in favour of spending as much as possible on roads just to get them up to where they should be.  

The police and fire departments will each be getting a million dollars more. City Transit will see an increase of 183 thousand dollars. 300 thousand dollars will be earmarked for redevelopment of the former Coast Guard site and improvements to Harbour Passage. 450 thousand dollars will be spent on upgrades to to the Trade and Convention Centre. 

The city will also be looking for a private partnership to install artificial turf at Shamrock Park.

Body Found Near Chesley & Hilyard

Man Who Cheated Dying Cancer Patient Going To Jail

A 29 year old man described as a serial fraudster and compulsive liar is off to jail for almost 2 years.

Darrell MacAuley pleading guilty in court today to a laundry list of 22 fraud and fraud-related charges including cheating a man dying of cancer out of money for home renovations.

He also stole truckloads of tools from a senior and cheated other people out of cell phones, musical equipment and more.

Judge Jamie LeMesurier also ordered MacAuley to pay his victims back.

Shoplifting Great Grandmother Caught

A 65-year-old great grandmother with 9 thefts and 3 breaches of probation on her record has been sentenced to house arrest after stealing a shrub from Kredl's in Hampton.

Shirley Hazel Rogers originally gave police a fake name when police came to her door, but eventually admitted to the theft which she says was the result of a compulsion she can't control.

Judge Jamie LeMesurier saying normally repeat shoplifters get jail time but he would take into account her age.

In addition to the house arrest she's prohibited from going to any stores unless accompanied by her common law husband.

Over 9 million dollars combined from the Feds and the Province to help build the new North end Y on Churchill Boulevard.

Tourism Minister Trevor Holder says its about having a world-class, first-class accessible YMCA facility in our community.

Holder says in 2013 it's very reasonable for a community of Saint John's size to expect that.

Juanita Black of Vibrant Communities Saint John tells CHSJ News it means a lot to see a big investment in the Old North End, Crescent Valley and Anglin Drive.

She says it opens the Y up for people to be able to walk there adding they don't need to be worried about transportation.

Y President & CEO Shilo Boucher says they expect to break ground next spring and the building should be open in the late fall of 2015.

Inter-City Bus Service Not Getting Enough Passengers On Some Routes

Lots of folks rely on the inter-city bus service to visit family, get to school, and find work--but according to Transportation Minister Claude Williams the pilot project connecting Bathurst, Campbellton, Miramichi and Moncton has less than half the passengers and packages it needs to be sustainable.

MLA Bill Fraser says there needs to be jobs in order for that to change.

As it currently stands, Maritime Bus is looking for business and community partnerships to support the route until it starts turning a profit.

Man Tries To Bring Cocaine Into Court, And Other Tales From The Police Blotter

It was a rather busy weekend for the Saint John Police Department.

Over the weekend, two men ages 38 and 42, and a 32-year-old woman were arrested  after a bar fight. They were released without charges once they'd sobered up, but a 35 year old was also charged with assaulting a peace officer.

As well, Sergeant Jay Henderson of the Saint John Police Department says fire officials are investigating a suspicious fire uptown on Charles Street.

In what might be called a poorly-thought out move, a 24 year old man who was going to see his probation officer at court was found to be in possession of cocaine. Police found the cocaine during a routine scan as he was entering the Law Courts at Peel Plaza. He has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Snow Ban Tonight

The city has declared an overnight parking ban on streets in the South-Central Peninsula to allow for snow clearing. 

The ban will be in effect from 11 tonight until 7 in the morning. Any vehicles parked on the street during that time will be towed. Six Parking Commission lots can be used by those drivers who normally park on the street between 6 tonight and 7 tomorrow morning. Those lots include

1. Corner of Princess and Charlotte Streets
2. King Street East
3. Peters Street
4. Carmarthen Street at the Vineyard Church
5. Mecklenberg Street at Wentworth
6.Corner of Charlotte and Queen St. (at Key Industries)

The new parking garage will be offering a 5 dollar rate between 6 tonight and 8 tomorrow morning.

Gallant Rejects Charge Of Waffling On Shale Gas

The Alward Government has been attacking Provincial Liberal Leader Brian Gallant for what they say is his wishy-washy stance on shale gas. 

Gallant tells CHSJ News his call for a moratorium on shale gas development is based on evidence, and there are too many unanswered questions about the environmental and health risks involved in the process.
 
Gallant argues there are still too many unanswered questions about the effects of fracking on the environment and human health.

Police Looking For Missing Teen

City police are looking for your help in finding a missing person.

17 year old Gavin Adams was last seen on Saturday night and was reported missing to police late Sunday afternoon.

He is about 5 foot 6, 150 pounds with a slim build, short brown curly hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a tan jacket, black hoodie, jeans, and black sneakers in the area of Chesley Drive in the North end.

A Big Financial Boost For The "Y"

The "Y" getting 9.2 million dollars in federal and provincial money to build its new facility on Churchill Boulevard in the north end. 

Saint John MP Rodney Weston announcing the federal contribution at $5.2 million with the province giving 4 million dollars. 

Mayor Mel Norton says it could be open by the fall of 2015.

Gov't Looking At Options To Fix Lorneville Road

Homes and businesses on the Lorneville Road are still accessible but a pipe failure under the Lorneville causeway leaving part of Lorneville Road closed to thru traffic in both directions because of safety concerns over a sinkhole.

Transportation Minister Claude Williams tells CHSJ News they'll have a better idea what to do about that this week. 

Williams says that was one of the pieces of infrastructure they needed to look into and there was some inspection done last summer, but you can't predict mother nature. He says this year they are dealing with over a million dollars in flood damage.

That part of Lorneville Road was flagged as a possible danger spot seven years ago.

Suspicious Fire

Damage was minor but there was a suspicious fire in the entrance to a building at 16 Charles Street which is under investigation. 

Some debris was found smouldering in the entranceway. It was quickly doused and the building ventilated.

Man Severely Beaten During Home Invasion

One man in his 20's taken to hospital last night with significant injuries after what City Police call a weapons offense that took place during a home invasion on City Line but not involving a firearm. 

Police telling CHSJ News the victim is expected to recover. 

2 men have been arrested for aggravated assault. Police say they all knew one another.

More Snow On The Way By Mid Week

Saint John Airport is reporting 21 centimeters of snow from yesterday's storm. 

Darin Borgel of Environment Canada tells CHSJ News it's back to the deep freeze with temperatures falling throughout the day.
 
Another weather maker comes into the region on Wednesday. Borgel says we could be getting another 10 to 15 centimeters of snow.

Assisted Living Facility Owner Speaks Out On New Admission Criteria

The owner of an assisted living facility wants the provincial government's new admission criteria for homes like his to be reversed.

David McNair of McNair Manor tells CHSJ News the Department of Social Development has changed the eligibility criteria so only those who have a dementia diagnosis can secure a spot at a specialized care bed home—unless you can pay for your placement out of pocket. McNair says those without dementia are no longer eligible for a subsidy. He calls it a clear disadvantage to those without the diagnosis, giving them no choice but a big institutional environment.

Minister of Social Development Madeline Dubé responding to concerns with a letter that says seniors with dementia are better served by staff specifically trained to manage their distinct needs.

McNair Manor is an assisted living facility with three locations, two in Moncton and one in Riverview, and plans to expand into Rothesay.

Big Announcement Coming On The Y Today

It looks like some good news may be coming today on the Saint John Y's new home in the North end.

An announcement is coming from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency according to Saint John MP Rodney Weston. It's happening at 9 o'clock this morning at the Somerset Community Centre.

Saint John Y CEO Shilo Boucher told us in November their goal is raise 7 million dollars to build their new home in the North end.

The new Y got $260,000 in donations last month.

How To Survive Being Storm-Stayed In Your Vehicle

As we're hit with the first big blast of winter this season, the Canadian Automobile Association is offering up some tips on how to survive being "storm-stayed" in your vehicle.

To be ready for the possibility, C-A-A's Gary Howard says your winter tires should have been put on long ago, you should have a cell phone on you, your battery should be top-notch and have a winter driving kit handy.

Howard says above all, if you have to be out, drive slower than normal if visibility is low and driving is slippery.

Alert family and friends of where you're going and check for road condition reports before heading out.

A Winter Wonderland Today

It has been a busy day for snowplow operators and snow clearing crews in the Maritimers.

Between 15 to 30 centimeters falling in Southern New Brunswick today, and about 15 to 12 in Nova Scotia, followed by rain.

Environment Canada telling us depending on where you live in New Brunswick, the snow should end this evening. Expect ice pellets along the Fundy coast this evening.

"Mindful Eating" Over The Holiday Season

Saint John dietitian Vanessa MacLellan tells CHSJ News, some ways to eat healthy during the holiday season.

Major Storm To Start Early Tomorrow

A major winter storm tomorrow is expected to dump from 20 to 30 centimeters of snow on southern New Brunswick and the south shore of Nova Scotia with up to 40 centimeters in Grand Manan. 

Gelas Duguay of Environment Canada tells CHSJ News the snow will start around daybreak and continue for much of the day before easing off tomorrow night.
 
There will also be strong winds. More snow is expected Monday but Duguay doesn't expect that will amount to very much before turning colder again on Tuesday.

Saint John Council Endorsing Shale Gas Development

Common Council in Saint John offering its official endorsement of shale gas development. Mayor Mel Norton tells CHSJ News, the timing has nothing to with this fall's tumultuous season of seismic testing by SWN Resources, but rather in what they've heard from business interests.

"We recognize that there's a provincial dynamic, and we recognize that there's another dynamic that's been happening the province. But our interest as city councilors is only in relation to this city," he says.

The Mayor says he's already spoken at meetings in Toronto and Calgary about the importance of shale gas, and he's committed to keep pushing for responsible development.

Rothesay Regional Police Says Engrave Your Tools

Rothesay Regional Police reminding construction and trades workers to engrave their tools. 

They've responded to many break and enters, and engraving your tools makes it a lot easier for police to track them down. Danielle Bordage speaks for Rothesay Regional Police.

"It was construction trailers that were broken into, and of course that means thousands of dollars in tools were stolen. Not to mention the lost wages [and] insurance claims," she says.  

The markings can simply be initials or a company name. This allows police to enter the tools into the National Data Bank of Stolen items.

Saint John Hotel On Reality TV

Chipman Hill Suites, owned by Common Councillor Susan Fullerton, will be featured sometime next year on the reality TV show "Hotel Impossible" with host Anthony Melchiorri. 

Fullerton tells CHSJ News it turned out to be nerve wracking in spite of preparing for his visit by having staff members want an episode and dissect it to determine what Anthony liked and what he didn't care for. 

Fullerton says Anthony accused her of being a micro manager which she does not dispute but he also concluded Chipman Hill Suites might be the cleanest hotel he's ever been in which is what they strive for.

  

Boil Water Order Lifted For Most Saint Johnners

The boil water in no longer in effect this morning except between 733 Rothesay Avenue (Fundy Honda)  and the end of Rothesay Road (at K-Park)

Water is now safe to consume in the remainder of the City.

Water test results have been reviewed with the Department of Health and the Medical Officer of Health has rescinded the boil water order for the above areas effective immediately.

What should you do?

§  If you have been home over the past few days, you have run the water in the house for washing and other things. You need to do nothing else, since in using the water you have effectively flushed out old water and brought fresher water into your plumbing.

§  If you have been away from your home during this period, it is recommended that you take a few minutes to flush out the water in your plumbing. This can be done by simply turning on each of the taps in your house for a few minutes. This will remove the water that has been sitting in the pipes while you were away and will draw cleaner, fresher water into your house.

BREAKING NEWS - Boil Order Lifted

The city has lifted the boil water order for everyone east of the Reversing Falls bridge with the exception of people living between Fundy Honda on Rothesay Avenue and K-Park. Those residents must continue to boil water until further notice.

Drunk Decision Leads To Big Trouble For Saint John Man

It's not a very smart move to get drunk and rob your own employer--considering they know exactly who you are.

That's the observation being made by Judge Henrik Tonning  to 35 year old Simon Basque.

Basque pleaded guilty to holding up his boss's brother at knife point, demanding a debit card, the PIN number, and car keys. He then tied up the victim in a bathroom and fled in their van.

He was later pulled over in Quebec and arrested. He said he doesn't know why he did it considering he didn't want to hurt anyone and he even had money on him at the time. Tonning suggested he get some alcohol counseling....and he'll be back in court on December 18th.

A Woman and Two Men Facing Drug Charges

Drugs and cash being seized by police after searches of three homes in the lower West side.

Sergeant Jay Henderson of City Police says three people have been arrested--A 50 year old woman and two men in their 50's facing charges of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and of having property obtained by crime.

Police also arresting a 29 year old woman for theft of a motor vehicle in connection with a hit and run on Prince Edward Street.
Henderson adds that when it occurred a media report was issued that the person involved fled from the scene.

Just before 6 o'clock last night police also receiving a call to a home on Rocky Terrace which was broken into and the thieves made off with some electronics and also did some damage.

Partying Tonight, Don't Drive The Next Morning

Mounties say you might want to wait a few hours before picking up your car after a night of heavy drinking.

Sergeant Al Leblanc says even if you've slept, it takes a while for the body to break down the booze.

He says waking up and jumping into your car isn't the best move.

He says sometimes people make the mistake of drinking extensively at night and go to sleep for a few hours and then 5 or 6 hours later they think they are ok to drive.  Leblanc calls that a big no-no.

Leblanc explains police often set up early morning checkstops to nab those people who had a lot to drink the night before and could still be impaired.

He says RCMP are working to debunk the myth that impaired drivers are only on the road at night.

VIDEO: One Mile Interchange Officially Open

A ribbon-cutting ceremony officially marking the long-anticipated opening of the One Mile Interchange.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams, Mayor Mel Norton and Saint John MP Rodney Weston on hand for the event.

Williams says it's unfortunate the project, which cost $83 million, ended up being over budget, but at the end of the day safety is not something they wanted to jeopardize and we now have safe infrastructure.

Mayor Mel Norton says the interchange is exactly the kind of infrastructure we need for the opportunities that are coming.

The interchange will improve the flow of traffic in East Saint John moving some heavy truck traffic off the highway and into the industrial park.

Canadian Medical Association Calling For A National Strategy On Dementia

The Canadian Medical Association saying the number of people with dementia is expected to increase, and the country needs a plan. 

Dr. Chris Simpson is President of the Association. He tells CHSJ News, families are looking for "assurances that the health care system will provide top notch, safe, appropriate care for patients, and preferably out of hospitals. Supporting them at home for as long as possible is really important to people," he says.

He adds, "The individual stories are really heart wrenching."

The cost of caring for these patients in Canada is $33-billion dollars per year. That covers hospital, healthcare costs, and the lost salaries of families taking care of patients.

It's estimated this will increase to $300-billion dollars by 2040, based on the growing number of patients with dementia.

Schofield In Court For Meth & Pot Charges

 44 year old Brian Schofield of Public Landing in court today answering to charges of possession of methamphetamine and marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Undercover officer Darrell Clark testifying Schofield's phone records show hundreds of texts and dozens of calls in code indicating a pretty serious involvement in the drug trade.

But Schofield's defence lawyer suggesting it was a friends-only sort of operation and it wasn't anything that Schofield would be getting rich on.

Police found several ounces of marijuana and 144 speed pills at the former Bacchus leader's home in Public Landing.

He's due back in court on December 27th for sentencing.

Government Plane Expected To Be Sold For Between $2M-$3M

The Ontario company hired as a broker in the sale of the provincial government's airplane, expects the aircraft will be sold for between $2 million and $3 million.

Transportation Minister Claude Williams estimates the plane is worth about $3.8 million.
 
The Director of Sales and Marketing for Flying Colours of Peterborough, Gary Wood points out there are between 70 and 80 aircraft of the same model already on the market and it could take six to nine months to sell the King Air B-200.

Boil Water Order Still On

Boiled or bottled are your choices if you want a drink of water.

The City telling everyone living east of the Reversing Falls Bridge is still under a boil water order.

Water sampling started late Wednesday night.

Storm Warning Issued

A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada which says an Arctic airmass has brought unseasonably cold temperatures which will remain with us through tomorrow. 

A low pressure system is forecast to develop tomorrow over the Southeastern United States and is expected to intensify as it moves towards Atlantic Canada during the day. 

There is the potential for significant snow, strong winds and blowing snow on Sunday for Southern New Brunswick.
 
Linda Libby of Environment Canada tells CHSJ News regions along the Fundy coastline can expect 15 to 20 centimetres of snow with strong winds even though the track of the storm is expected to pass south of Nova Scotia.

Four Vehicles Collide In One Of The Busiest Traffic Spots In City

A four vehicle collision last night in one of the busiest traffic areas of the city. 

It happened between 630 and 7 at Loch Lomond Road and Champlain Drive which caused a traffic jam. 

The jaws of life were used to extricate two people who were trapped.

New Drug Plan Coming Under Fire

A prescription and catastrophic drug plan sounds great--but what will happen when the plan is made mandatory in 2015 and everyone has to pay the premiums?

That's the question being asked by Liberal Health Critic Donald Arsenault, who's also wondering what actions will be taken against people who don't opt into the plan.

But Health Minister Ted Flemming is offering a kinder, gentler view--he says no one who is having financial struggles will be forced to pay premiums they can't afford, and that the government exists to help people.

Liberal MLA Bernard Leblanc says it's going to be a rude awakening for some New Brunswickers when they find out the drugs they need aren't covered under the so-called catastrophic plan.

Man Facing Robbery Charge In Senior Mugging

A 30 year old will be in court tomorrow on a charge of robbery after a purse snatching last weekend.

It happened on Leinster street last Saturday when a man grab a purse from a 74 year old woman in the early evening.

UPDATE: Car Crash Topples Telephone Pole In The KV

A car that crashed into a telephone pole being described as a write-off by police.

The crash happening in front of the fire station on Campbell Drive just after 8am and Sergeant Forret of the Rothesay Regional Police says they think it happened after another vehicle, which was coming in the opposite direction, did not yield the right of way.

The pole was knocked down onto the car, caving in the front, but no one was injured.

 Forrest says the situation tied up traffic for a while, with crews spending about an hour clearing the scene.

SJ Resident Cautiously Optimistic About New Drug Plan

Lots of patients have been waiting for the prescription and catastrophic drug plan unveiled earlier this week. 

One of them is Saint John resident Mark Brennan, who tells CHSJ News, he has a very serious kidney condition called PNH and the medication to treat it would cost 6 figures if he had to pay for it out of pocket.

"If it is covered under this new plan, it would certainly be a big load off of my mind. I know I don't just speak for myself in that regard, a lot of people have been waiting for this," he says. 


Brennan says he's cautiously optimistic that the plan will be a game-changer for him and others in his situation.
