District Six is preparing to launch a new high-tech tool called VersaTrans. It is an upgrade to the current bus system and Director of Transportation Steve Evans this new set-up is going to make their job easier and the expectation for safety from parents can be met.
Evans says all officials who are and will be using this new set-up have really embraced the technology. The new system will go on-line in the fall. Cost of the new system is between $20 and $30,000 dollars.

Conservation Council Speaks Out at Open Session

The Provincial Environment Department hosted an open house last night and opened the floor to comments on the proposed Eider Rock second refinery. The Conservation Council was well represented with several speakers including it's science advisor Inka Milewski. She tells CHSJ News, the council as a whole is thrilled to hear the project has been put on the back burner by Irving Oil.
Milewski says the base line health study completed in the Environmental Impact Assessment mis-represents the base line health status of those living in Saint John and the residents of Simonds Parish.

Michelle Daige was on hand last night representing the Environment Department. She tells CHSJ News, an independent panel will now get to work on it's findings from what they have heard and should have a final report handed over the next month.
The final Environmental Impact Assessment prepared for the project from Irving Oil has been handed over to the province and they are satisfied the company will take appropriate actions to protect the environment.

The second day of the new fall session in Fredericton was a lot like the first. A proposed deal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec dominated question period. Saint John-Portland Conservative MLA Trevor Holder tells CHSJ News, the Graham Government doesn't have answers for their questions.
Premier Graham defended the proposal saying it was too good to refuse because it will lower power rates and reduce the provincial debt by 40 per cent.
District Eight Falling Short on Math Numbers
This years provincial assessment numbers are showing District 8 needs improvement in it's math scores. Director of Education Bev MacDonald says the district knows the scores need to improve and strategies are being put into place to find a remedy but parents and the public need to change their attitude towards math.
MacDonald adds when children constantly hear parents say they cannot do math, or are not good with numbers it is passed on. On the literacy side, District 8 was above or reaching provincial targets at all grade levels.

Rothesay High School Getting a New Look

The District Six Education Council is putting in a request for more modular class-rooms at Rothesay High. There are currently three at the school and if the Province approves, four more would be set up by next fall. Superintendent Zoe Watson says the school is bursting at the seams with class-rooms being held in the cafeteria and some teachers with no room to call their own.
Watson adds the top priority for the district remains the refit of Kennebecasis Park school with the hope of good news coming from the Province by next month.
H1N1 Clinic in Sussex
Adults with chronic conditions included in the next priority group can get the H1N1 vaccine in Sussex today. Public Health is holding a clinic at Sussex Middle school. The new priority group includes those with asthma, chronic bronchitis as well as people with respiratory issues. The clinic opens this afternoon at 1:30 and finishes up tonight at 7pm.

Gas Prices Continue to Fall
For the third straight week.....the price of gasoline has taken a tumble. The Energy and Utilities Board has released it's weekly price schedule showing a litre of self-serve going for 97.8 cents. That is down from 98.4 with most stations in the metro selling the black gold for 98.2.
Diesel is down as well coming in at $101.6, furnace oil tops off 82.2 which is down almost two cents and propane saw the only increase, just under a penny at 93.3.

Construction Set to Get Started
A sod-turning ceremony at St. Joseph's Community Health Center this morning will mark the beginning of construction for the new Leisure Wellness Garden. The garden is a fundraising project of this years Dragon Boat Festival.

New Moon Debuts Tonight in Saint John
Calling all fans of Edward, Bella and Jacob.......the next movie in the Twilight saga, "New Moon", opens in theatres tonight. It happens officially at midnight but, Empire Studio 10 in East Saint John has three advance screenings tonight. Assistant Manager Victoria Hutchison tells CHSJ News, the first two are sold out but there are tickets left for the 10:30 screening tonight.

Gagetown Ferry Will Operate Into December
The Province's Transportation Minister says the Gagetown ferry will keep running into December.
Denis Landry says this decision honours recommendations by a community working group that looked at the future of three ferries. Landry says the 52 year old Gagetown vessel will continue to operate until early to mid December before the Saint John River freezes up.
The Graham Government agreed in September to continue operating the vessel on a seasonal basis for 18 hours a day. Landry says his government is making good on another recommendation by the working group. That is the ferry will undergo assessment by a naval architect to determine if it meets federal standards and outline any necessary upgrades and costs.

Local Teens Promote Program for Homeless Teens
A group of teens are travelling around the city raising awareness about the Teen Resource Centre and its Oasis program.
The program helps teens with free showers, laundry services or personal needs.
Volunteer Chantal Savoie says the drop-in centre is available for all teens who need somewhere to go after school.
There are over 120 homeless teens in Uptown Saint John.

Elsie Wayne Continues Her Recovery

Former MP and Mayor Elsie Wayne continues to rest and recover. This after the 77-year old suffered a stroke almost two weeks ago. Brian Mosher is a long time friend of the family and tells CHSJ News, she is still at the Regional and showing improvement everyday.
Her speech is slowly coming back but she is still having trouble swallowing and is working with a therapist to correct that problem. Mosher says there is no timeline as to when she will be going home.
Premier Responds to Proposed Tax Rate Change
Premier Graham is defending his parties latest move concerning tax rates as municipalities continue to go over their budgets. The Liberal Government has proposed a cut in the rate for every municipality in the province, some as high as 11 cents. Graham tells CHSJ News, after years of complaints, they have put a new mechanism in place they hope will aleviate some of the pressure on home and property owners.
Graham adds if municipalities choose to access those tax dollars from residents of those homes, with-out having to provide extra infrastructure, they have to pass that vote in council.

Open House Tonight on Eider Rock
The Environmental Impact Assessment process continues for the Eider Rock project even though it is on hold. The Provincial Environment Department will hold an open house tonight to hear positive or negative comments. The final EIA documentation prepared for the project from Irving Oil has been handed over to the province. They are satisfied the company will take appropriate actions to protect the environment and now begins the public consultation process.
The Clean Air Coalition is not in favor of the project and since day one, has been calling for a Federal E.I.A before the project is given the green light to proceed with construction. Tonight's meeting gets started at seven o'clock at the Simonds Lions Auditorium on the Loch Lomond Road.
Update on Construction of Costco Store
All of you waiting patiently to do some shopping at the new Costco Store in East Saint John, are going to have to wait a little while longer. Even though construction is moving along at a solid pace, the store won't have a ribbon cutting until May. Troy Northrup with East Point Shopping tells CHSJ News, they expect to have a few more announcements about the area soon.

Winter Meeting Tonight
Municipal Operations has the second of it's five meetings ready to go tonight. It's to discuss the City's Winter Management Plan for snow removal and information on changes to on street parking. The first was Monday night and was received well by residents of Ward One.

Cherry Brook Zoo Looking for Cash
Respresentatives from the Cherry Brook Zoo are asking Quispamsis council to support the facility in becoming a regional facility. This, according to the director would ensure financial stability for the zoo. Lynda Collrin tells CHSJ News, finances are the only concern regarding keeping it's accreditation, and this change will give them the funds they need.
By supporting the change, Quispamsis will make a financial committment, so the issue has been reffered to the finance committee, as did the town of Rothesay.

Red Cross Awards Handed Out Tonight
The ballroom at the Delta will provide the back-drop for the 2009 Red Cross Humanitarian Awards. Two women, Diane Ganong and Leah Secord will be honored. Ganong is from St. Stephen and Secord is a high school student here in Saint John, will receive the 2009 Young Humanitarian for her dedication to helping others.

Social Media and Small Business don't mix so well according to a new survey. BizLaunch.ca found 49 per cent of the entrepreneurs surveyed spent up to 101 hours in social media promotions but, only 28 per cent say that investment brought returns. Andrew Patricio of BizLaunch.ca says the biggest mistake small business owners make with social media is using your Facebook page or Twitter account only to plug sales or specials.

The thrill of a lifetime will happen for many on Tuesday of next week. More of those people chosen to escort the Olympic Flame through Greater Saint John have been announced. In Quispamsis, the torch will be carried by the mother and daughter duo of Cindi and Megan Baisley. It's expected to arrive in the Town just after 3:30pm on Tuesday of next week. The town is holding it's annual tree lighting ceremony tonight in the Arts and Culture Park. Mayor Driscoll and councilors will be there and along with the tree, the switch will be thrown on the town's Dreamland Display.

Strong Numbers for Saint John Area Real Estate
After you hear these numbers, you might not wonder any longer why so many people in Greater Saint John are choosing Real Estate as a profession. The numbers are in for the residential average price for homes sold by Saint John Real Estate Board’s MLS® system. They set a new record with the average price for a home up 18% to over $178,600 dollars.

No Curfew for Quispamsis
The town of Quispamsis will not implement a curfew bylaw. The request came from a resident who noticed young people strolling through his property and ringing his doorbell at all hours of the night and early morning. Rothesay Regional Police Chief Stephen McIntyre wrote to council advising them the cost of prosecuting offenders would be considerable and would be the sole responsibility of the town.
McIntyre adds he would not like to see a situation where officers are taken away from other duties because they are taking a young person home or waiting to turn them over to an adult.

Project at the Irving Oil Refinery is Finished
It took almost 1.4 million working hours and cost 220-million dollars but, the Irving Oil Refinery maintenance project is finished. During the peak of the project, there were 2300 construction people working. Spokesperson Lesley MacLeod tells CHSJ News, even better news is no one was hurt over the two month stretch and that means no lost time.
During the project, 37 cranes capable of lifting 750 tonnes each were used and this is the largest project of it's kind for the refinery.

New Bylaw for Subdivisions in Quispamsis
From now on, subdivisions in Quispamsis are going to require more focus on storm water management. A bylaw is now in affect requiring developers to conduct an examination on stormwater sewers and any impact rain and snow melt would have on neighbouring properties. Director of Engineering Gary Losier tells CHSJ News, so far the feedback from new residents is positive.

The Provincial Conversatives are taking to YouTube and the web to get their views out on the proposal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec. Leader David Alward says they want to offer the people of the province straight talk on the issue and says these sites serve as tools to help New Brunswickers get the real facts about the deal.

Graham Continues to Sell the Proposal

Premier Graham was the guest speaker at the KV Chamber of Commerce Luncheon yesterday. The topic up for discussion of course was the proposed deal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec. Graham says he has heard the concerns about what happens after the five year rate freeze comes to an end, and between 2003 and 2008, there has been an increase of 25% on rate payers bills.
Graham adds other long terms savings under the proposal include the decommissioning of Point Lepreau in 30 years and the Mactaquac Dam upgrades which both become responsibilities of Hydro-Quebec.

With no referendum vote planned for the proposed NB Power-Hydro-Quebec proposal, the Conservative Government is re-newing it's call for transparency from the Graham Government. The Premier has said he still hasn't heard a viable option from the opposistion but David Alward tells CHSJ News, they do have a plan for the future of the public utility.

Provincial Budget Just Weeks Away
With all this talk of the proposal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec, it's easy to forget the budget will be handed down on Dec.1st. That is roughly two months ahead of the norm which has political observers wondering if it is a good or bad news budget. Former Finance and now Business Minister Victor Boudreau tells CHSJ News, like the document in the spring, there are some tough decisions to be made.

Margaret Ann Blaney is geared up for what is expected to be a lively session of the Legislature. The Conservative MLA for Rothesay tells CHSJ News, Premier Graham's prediction of wiping out 40% of the Province's debt with this deal doesn't jive with what the auditor general has added up.

Former Heart Surgeon Will Ride for the Conservatives

A retired heart surgeon will carry the banner for the Conservative Party in the riding of Fundy River Valley. Dr. Jim Parrot was officially nominated to run for the party in next falls provincial election last night. No question, Parrot brings a wealth of back-ground in healthcare but we also asked him about the proposed NB Power and Hydro-Quebec deal. Parrot tells CHSJ News, this is a bad deal for the entire province.

Rally Today in Fredericton
No word on how many are expected, but a rally is scheduled for the front steps of the Legislature today. People who don't like the proposal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec will be on hand to voice their disgust with the memorandum of understanding. Doug Williams is the organizer and tells CHSJ News, Premier Graham was elected on a promise that he would not sell off the assets of the utility.

Health Minister Not Concerned Her Issues Will Be Lost

With the opening of the legislative assembly today expected to be dominated by discussions around the proposed deal between NB Power and Hyrdro Quebec, the Health Minister isn't afraid issues in her file will get lost in the shuffle. Mary Schryer says the health affects every New Brunswicker.
Schryer adds the 144 new doctors in the province and the new emergency departments in Saint John and will also be up for discussion.

This winter will see an on street parking ban on all city streets from November 15th to April 15th, with a few exceptions. A resident at the Ward 1 winter management meeting last night asked if the city is going to find designated lots for vehicles to park in during snow storms. Deputy Commissioner of Municipal Operations Kevin Rice tells CHSJ News, the city is looking into it.

Milford Resident Happy With What She Hears
Milford resident Debbie Taylor says she is impressed by the citys plan for managing the winter months. Taylor tells CHSJ News, last year she was concerned about the city contracting out plowing jobs.

The lights are back on in the North End
The Power is back on in the North End. The lights were out for a short time along Adelaine Street between Main Street and Neuman Street. Employees and shoppers were impacted at the Eddie Bauer Call Centre and Zellers until emergency power kicked in. The source of the problem was a pole near Cunard and Bridge streets in the lower North End. Saint John Energy is taking care of the problem.
Body positively identified as Bonnell
A body discovered in woods near Tracadie-Sheila has been positively identified as 16-year-old Hilary Bonnell.
The postitive identification was made through dental records.
Autopsy results to determine a cause of death are expected to take several weeks.
RCMP announced Friday that they have a supect in custody.
The teen went missing in early September near her home on the First Nation commonly known as Burnt Church.

Doherty Will Administer Shots Today
Supply and Services Minister Dr. Ed Doherty will be putting on the lab coat this afternoon to administer H1N1 vaccination shots.
Dr. Doherty will be giving the swine flu shots at the St. Rose School clinic and says he volunteered for the spot to help give the front line workers a bit of rest.
The clinic runs from 1:30 to 4:30.

No Vaccines Wasted in New Brunswick

No H1N1 vaccination shots have been destroyed in this province according to the Health Minister.
Mary Schryer says the swine flu vaccine has a short shelf life, but to her knowledge there hasn't been any shots go to waste in New Brunswick.
This comes after nearly 80 doses of the vaccine was discarded in Halifax, and nearly 475 doses in Toronto.
Schryer says so far there has been over 150 thousand people vaccinated so far in the province, and expects 40 thousand more by the end of the week.

The provincial government is giving St. Joseph's Hospital a $300 thousand dollar shot in the arm to improve eye health care.

Stabbing in the Kennebecasis Valley
The weekend in the Kennebecasis Valley finished up on a violent note. Rothesay Regional Police tell us one person was stabbed last night. They were called to Scott Avenue just after 8:30pm and quickly took one person into custody.
The person stabbed is going to be alright and another person has a date with the judge to answer to charges later today.

Holder Talks About Top Issue for Fall Sitting

Saint John Portland M-L-A Trevor Holder says the proposed deal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec is going to be the hot topic at the opening of the Legislature tomorrow. Holder tells CHSJ News, his government is responsible for holding the Graham Government accountable for the deal.
Holder adds the sale should be up to the people either in a referendum or a general election.
Saint John East MLA Given an Honor
A familiar face will be the mover of the Throne Speech at the opening of the fourth session of the 56th legislative assembly tomorrow. Saint John East M-L-A Roly McIntyre is receiving the honour and Premier Shawn Graham says there is no one more suited for the task.

Ward One Winter Meeting
If you have concerns about snow removal this winter, or wondering about any changes to on street parking, the city will try and clear everything up with a meeting tonight. In the first of 5 ward meetings, residents of Ward 1 will receive a presentation from Municipal operations.
The meeting will outline the citys Winter Management Plan and discuss any changes made to by-laws regarding on street parking and the strategies for keeping snow and ice off streets. Things get underway at 6:30 at St. Marks Church.

Maintenance Work at LNG Terminal
Some scheduled maintenance at the Canaport Liquified Natural Gas Terminal gets started today. It's expected to last the entire week and will result in partial suspension of operations at the terminal.
When operations resume, flaring will occur and will be visible for a few hours.

Hampton Teen to Carry Olympic Torch
A 15 year old Hampton High Student will carry the Olympic Flame through his town. Antoine Clark will carry the flame about 300 metres starting along Main Street and ending at the Whistle Stop Diner.
Clark was asked by the school to be the torch bearer, and will do so on the 24th just after three in the afternoon.

There are two parades next weekend with the West Side edition in the afternoon followed by the Kennebecasis Valley Santa Parade that night. The winners for last night's Saint John Parade will be awarded their hardware at a future common council meeting.

Alward Says H1N1 Clinic Logistics Needs A Tune Up

The leader of the Provincial Tories says he is concerned over the logistics involved in the H1N1 vaccination clinics.
David Alward tells CHSJ News, there have been difficulties regarding communications.
Alward says every province has faced problems with how the clincis have rolled out and the Conservatives have been briefed on the issues. He adds he is concerned about the logistics of getting people through the line ups and getting care to those who need it the most.

With budget deliberations already underway around the Province, there will be some hard number crunching in municipalities in the coming weeks. This after the Province announced municipalities lower their tax rates including Rothesay by ten cents. Mayor Bill Bishop tells CHSJ News, the biggest complaint he hears from home-owners is the increase year after year on property assessments:
Bishop adds in the past when tax-payers got an increase on their bill, municipalities would say it is because of the assessments. Now the Province is looking to turn the table by saying if taxes go up, it is the municipality that did so.

11 cents is the number the Province would like to see the Town of Quispamsis cut it's tax rate. Mayor Murray Driscoll tells CHSJ News, his town cannot operate the way it is now with that big of a cut to the tax rate.
Driscoll adds he and staff will crunch the numbers but would be very suprised if they can get it near an 11 cent reduction.

Grand Bay Westfield isn't running scared by the numbers proposed for it's tax rate by the Province. Mayor Grace Losier tells CHSJ news, the nine cent decrease on the tax rate for her town is where the Province believes the rate should be.
Losier adds assessed property values in Grand Bay Westfield are up 47% over the past five years which they understand is a hardship but your home is an investment as well. The current tax rate in the town is $1.37.

The rates are determined by a formula using the tax base of communities from the previous year, plus new construction and a market value increase of up to inflation.
Saint John's current rate is 1.78, and the province suggests it should be at 1.73.
Around greater Saint John---Rothesay is suggested to be 10 cents lower, Quispamsis by about 11 cents, Grand Bay Westfield by 9 cents, and Hampton by 8 cents.

No Injuries in Accident Last Night
Three people may be purchasing lotto tickets after a car crash last night.
City police tell us just before 9 o'clock a vehicle carrying three people rolled onto it's roof on Hillcrest Road.
The car appeared to be destroyed when police arrived, but all three passengers were able to escape injury.
Police say it's not exactly known how the car flipped, it seems the driver just lost control.

Councillor Encourages Composting

Composting organic material can save you and the city money. That from Councillor Chris Titus highlighting some points in the Fundy Solid Waste Commissions budget. With the charge for compostable materials going from 35 to 28 dollars a ton, Titus says it's an obvious choice for residents to use their compost bins:
Titus says right now people are composting about 19 per cent, but would like to see that number increase to around 40 per cent.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
The parade gets started at six on the causeway and will wrap up in the North End. Along with your letters to Santa, your encouraged to bring a coat or food for pick-up along the route and the Animal Rescue League is also collecting cat food.

Province Reports Two Deaths From H1N1
The province has its first deaths related to the H1N1 virus, they are two men-one in his early sixties and the other in his seventies.
The Department of Health says testing has confirmed that both men had the H1N1 virus. Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eilish Cleary says both men had an underlying condition that increased their risk of complications from the flu.
Health Minister Mary Schryer offered sympathies to the men's famillies for their loss.
Schryer said the deaths highlight how important it is for everyone to be vigilant and to protect ourselves and others.

St. Joe's Flu Assessment Centre Closing Up Shop
Due to a lack of patients, the Flu Assessment Centre at St. Joe’s will close at 6pm tonight. The Horizon Health Network will evaluate the need to reopen the centre in the coming weeks.
They want to remind the public that anyone with flu symptoms should stay home and minimize contact with their family members.

Poverty Forum Wraps Up

The final forum on poverty is wrapped up and the plan's objective is to reduce income poverty by 25 per cent, and deep income poverty by 50 per cent by 2015.
Social Development Minister Kelly Lamrock says there is going to be major reform to the social assistance program.
Under the reform, those on social assistance can have roommates, and the rate for two is now being doubled.
Lamrock also says there is also going to be an affordable universal prescription drug plan introduced in the province.

Two Infrastructure loans have been approved for Saint John. It totals $1.4 million dollars for the re-construction of three streets......Braemar and Brunswick Drives along with Paul Harris Street. Mayor Ivan Court says these type of projects may not be sexy but they are necessary and provide proper piping into the communities where the work was completed.
Work on Paul Harris and Brunswick Drive finished up over a month ago and Municipal Operations is checking for us as to whether or not work has started or finished on Braemar Drive.

Senior Hurt in ATV Crash
Close call for a 70-year old man from Wards Creek yesterday. RCMP tell us he escaped serious injury in an ATV accident on the Quirk Road. He lost control of the machine, it flipped, caught fire and was destroyed.
His injuries are not serious and he didn't need any medical treatment.

Budget Process Underway at City Hall
The Finance Committee is getting an early look at the year end budget, and it's looking like it will be in the red. The budget is about half a million dollars over, but that's not too bad considering the total budget is over $125 million dollars. Commissioner of Finance Greg Yeomans says the weather last year pushed up costs.
Yeomans says the projected numbers are likely to stay the same if the weather continues to cooperate and the final numbers will be known by late February and then be presented to council.

Two News Conferences Close Out the Week
The results of the final forum on poverty will be released to the public this afternoon. Premier Graham and Social Development Minister Kelly Lamrock will unveil the results of the forum that's be going on in the city since yesterday at 12:30pm. The forum is set up to initiate a plan for the province to reduce the amount and get people out of the cycle that is poverty.

Gas Prices Are Back Down
The yo-yo that is gas prices continues it's up and down motion. The Energy and Utilities Board has released it's weekly price schedule which shows the price of gasoline down by close to two cents. Most stations in Greater Saint John are selling a litre of self-serve for 98.7 cents.
Diesel comes in at $102.6, Furnace Oil is down close to two cents as well at an even 84 cents and propane is at 92.6 cents a litre.

Canada-Mexico Meetings in Saint John This Weekend
The Congress of the Union of the United Mexican States will meet outside of Ottawa for the first time since it's inception back in 1975. The two day conference gets started today in Saint John and MP Rodney Weston tells CHSJ News, this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase what the city has to offer.
Both delegations will be made up of 35 members and will wrap up tomorrow afternoon at 5:30pm.

Debbie Cooper is Thrilled with Opportunity
Debbie Cooper of the Boys and Girls Club is the Olympic Torch Bearer for Saint John. It's a secret she's been keeping since July and tells CHSJ News, she would love to see a huge crowd of people for the event on the 24th. The festivities begin at 5pm at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal with a children's carnival.
Cooper will carry the flame down Water Street at 7 O'clock to light the cauldron outside the cruise ship terminal with a fireworks display to follow at eight o'clock.

Traffic moving again along Rothesay Avenue

Police, fire and ambulance crews responded to a single-vehicle rollover at 378 Rothesay Avenue. The accident occurred about 1:30 this afternoon.
A person was initially trapped in the SUV vehicle but, was removed.
The driver was treated in hospital and released.
Traffic is moving again along Rothesay Avenue.
Torch Bearer Announced for Saint John
After months of speculation, City Hall has finally announced who will be carry the Olympic torch when it runs through the city on the 24th. Debbie Cooper, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club has been given the honor and is beyond thrilled. Director of Communications Nancy Moar tells CHSJ News, Cooper has been with the organization for 30 years and is very deserving of this task.
That celebration includes a carnival for children followed by the lighting of a make-shift cauldron at seven o'clock. Fireworks will wrap up the night and they are set to go at eight o'clock.

H1N1 Update from Health Department

By tomorrow, all first nations communities and pregnant women around the province will have had an opportunity to receive the H1N1 vaccine. There is continuing wide-spread activity, with 68 people in the hospital, 40% are under the age of 20 and no deaths. Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Eilish Cleary their focus next week will turn to people with breathing problems and chronic disease.
Dr. Cleary adds all children under the age of five should be finished getting their vaccine by next week as well. So far, 145,000 vaccines have been distributed around the Province and another 45,000 arrived on Monday.
Poverty Reduction Forum

After months of open houses and gathering information, politicians, front line workers, business owners and those living in poverty have gathered at the Trade and Convention Center. By tomorrow afternoon, they hope to emerge with the final wording of what will make up the Poverty Reduction Initiative. Premier Shawn Graham says in order for this to be successful, all involved must get involved.
Premier Graham applauds Social Services Minister Kelly Lamrock for challenging the status quo of social assistance. A news conference is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon to release details of the conference.
Fuel Prices Won't Move Until Friday
It's Thursday and normally we would tell you what the new price of fuel products is around the Province. How-ever, due to the holiday yesterday, the Energy and Utilities Board will not let us know if the price for gasoline, furnace oil, propane and diesel is going up or down until tomorrow.

Proposed Bike Trails Up for Discussion
There is a public information review on the prospect of more bike trails in the city. The Glenn Group and city staff will be presenting a bike trail review this evening at the North End Community Centre. Up for discussion is the plan for three levels of trails for the corner of Shamrock Park by Spar Cove Road and Millidge Avenue as well as possibly putting in a "pump" track beside the parking lot.

Canadian Tire Talks About 2009
It's one of the most recognizable logo's in retail and the president of the company was in Saint John earlier this week to talk about the future. Michael Arnett is the boss at Canadian Tire and tells CHSJ News, they noticed many of their customers bought supplies for an upgrade and not new merchandise.
Arnett says Canadian Tire is weathering the recession with a drop in sales for the second quarter from last year but improvement for the bottom line.

No Changes Coming for Sand Cove Road
Despite the recommendation from the Planning Advisory Comittee----Common Council is denying the request to rezone 1070 Sand Cove Road. David Baker wanted to buy the property and have it rezoned from single family to two family dwelling and build a duplex but neighbours appeared before council voicing concerns over water drainage. Councillor Bruce Court says he used to live in the neighbourhood and knows how damp it is.

Right of Way Dispute in Rothesay
A few concerns have been raised over access to the waterfront in Kennebecasis Park by residents who use a common right-of-way. The dispute surfaced after a recent article in the Rothesay Reader suggested the town of Rothesay is allowing trails through the area be developed by property owners adjacent to the right-of-ways. Mayor Bill Bishop says they have received three letters from residents.

Another Year for Operation Red Nose
With the Christmas party season in full swing, another holiday tradition is starting as well. Fusion Saint John is kicking off it's Operation Red Nose campaign today for it's second year. Coordinator Katie Emrich says there was a great response last year to the program and hopes this year will be just as good.
Emrich says last year about 60 per cent of users travelled outside of city limits and is expecting this year to be similiar. The goal of the volunteer based, free service is to keep anyone who has had a few drinks from gettign behind the wheel.

A full house at the Weslyn Church for the Rememberance Day Ceremony in the Kennebecasis Valley. Both Rothesay and Quispamsis combine their efforst to honor those soldiers who have and continue to serve. Petty Officer William Aves served in the North Atlantic between 1942 and 45 and tells CHSJ News, it's a day that brings back a flood of memories but it's wonderful to see so many come out and honor the memory of those who never made it home.
Agnes Hunt was on hand in memory of her husband who served over-seas between 1939 and 42. She reminds those who have loved ones currently serving to keep the faith. Several dignitaries were on hand as well to lay wreaths on behalf of the Provincial and Federal governments including Senator John Wallace and Health Minister Mary Schryer.

The signature Remembrance Day event takes place at Harbor Station with ceremonies also planned in Quispamsis, Rothesay, Grand Bay Westfield and St. Martins. If your going to Harbour Station, officials ask you try to be in your seat by 10:30am.

Jack Keir's request isn't falling on deaf ears. Saint John MP Rodney Weston tells CHSJ News, he and the Energy Minister are on the same page when it comes to this topic.
Weston adds this is something that needs to be dealt with by the people that know best like the people who put this contract together.
Province Can't Take All the Blame Over Point Lepreau Refurbishment

If the proposed deal between NB Power and Hydro Quebec goes through there could be some energy rate increases during year six. That according to energy minister Jack Keir--- who says the replacement fuel costs at Point Lepreau may increase energy rates after the 5 year freeze. Keir says Atomic Energy of Canada and Ottawa need to take responsibility for some of the cost. He adds AECL has said the project schedule was too optimistic, there wasn't enough prep work done and hindsight is 20/20:
As of right now the refurbishment is 18 months behind schedule.
Remembrance Day Blood Donor Clinic
Canadian Blood Services opened on November 11th last year because of low supply and has a very successful clinic.
Spokesperson Amanda Cullen tells CHSJ News they hope the holiday will give people a chance to drop by and roll up their sleeves.
Cullen says anyone with questions on blood donation, should call 1-888-2-DONATE.
