Common Council will be hearing tonight about pay equity even though the city does not have any jurisdiction over that issue. Councillor Patty Higgins wants the city to urge the provincial government to legislate pay equity claiming women's income is just 67 per cent of that earned by men. There is pay equity among workers in the provincial government. Elizabeth Blaney of the Provincial Coalition on Pay Equity says its clear private employers will not go along without being forced to by law.
Blaney concedes women are a long way from achieving pay equity.
