Colorectal cancer is among the four deadliest cancers in the Province with lung, breast and prostate being the other three.
34 per cent of New Brunswickers between the ages of 50 and 74 report being tested in the last two years which is far below the benchmark of 80 per cent.
Dr. Eshwar Kumar of the New Brunswick Cancer Network tells CHSJ News a lack of organized screening programs contribute to the problem.
He says the screening programs are new in Canada and one will be in place in this province by 2013.
Kumar adds colorectal cancer is preventable through early detection.
He says the risk factors include a diet rich in processed red meat along with inactivity and being overweight. For more information, click here
